I went to Hongdae for pork belly and for a second thought I'd been teleported to Gapyeong haha

This time I visited TAGE Indoor Camping Hongdae Main Branch, which, just as the name says, recreates a camping ground atmosphere entirely indoors — an unusual kind of grilled-meat restaurant. Honestly, before visiting I had one worry: since it's an indoor camping spot in a basement, I thought grilling meat might make the place stuffy with smoke and smell. But once I actually got in, it was way more pleasant than I expected, and on top of that the lighting was so beautifully set up that the vibe felt genuinely special. It was a great Hongdae restaurant for a day when you want more than just plain pork belly — when you want the atmosphere too :)

TAGE Indoor Camping Hongdae Main Branch is on B1, 79 Wausan-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It's about 650m from Exit 9 of Hongik University Station, and it's open daily from 11:00 to 23:00.

From outside it's smack in the middle of Hongdae, but once you head down to the basement the whole atmosphere changes.

A basement that feels like a Gapyeong campground

What I liked best about TAGE Indoor Camping Hongdae Main Branch was, of course, the space! It's full of interior details and lights that give off that camping mood everywhere you look, so even though you're indoors, it feels like you're outside at night looking up at stars. So it felt much less like a plain restaurant you eat at and leave, and much more like visiting an indoor camping ground in the middle of the city. Getting this vibe without driving all the way to Gapyeong, right here in Hongdae — haha, amazing.

One big advantage of indoor camping is that it's not affected by weather. You can get the camping mood even on a rainy day or when it's too hot or too cold. And like I mentioned, ventilation was my biggest worry going in, but once I was actually there, it stayed comfortable enough that it barely felt like a basement. Even though it's a space for grilling meat, I never felt stuffy and could eat comfortably.

The fresh pork belly grilled at TAGE Indoor Camping Hongdae Main Branch was thick-cut with a satisfying chew and plenty of juiciness. Tableware and sauces are set up at a self-serve bar, so you just grab as much as you need.

As the saying goes, even Geumgangsan Mountain comes after a meal — and the heart of camping is really the meat, right? Add in the sound and smell of pork belly sizzling and it truly feels like camping. It's a different kind of fun from eating at an ordinary grilled-meat place. Food matters, but the mood and who you're eating with become part of the whole experience too. True to its reputation as a great spot for indoor camping, the meat quality was excellent — thick-cut with a good chew and juicy, so I really enjoyed it.

Tableware and sauces were all set up nicely at the self-serve bar, so I could grab whatever I needed comfortably. Beyond ordering meat directly, it was surprising that this place lets you bring in outside food or delivery, which really widens the menu options.

40,000 won per table: can you bring outside food to TAGE?

At TAGE Indoor Camping Hongdae Main Branch, renting one table costs ₩40,000, and food ordered in-store is added on top of that. On the other hand, outside food is allowed, so you can bring whatever you're craving.

At first the separate table rental fee felt a little unfamiliar, but being able to bring outside food turned out to be a big plus. It's like packing whatever you want to eat when you go camping — you can prepare things exactly to your taste. We had two servings of fresh pork belly in-store, and we didn't just eat the meat plain — we wrapped it in lettuce properly and also had golbaeng-i bibimmyeon (spicy whelk noodles) alongside it. Take a bite of the spicy-tangy noodles, then a bite of pork belly — best combo ever, ugh. You really do need noodles alongside meat, don't you.

And at the end, we even fried kimchi right on the grill pan. Kimchi fried in pork belly fat needs no explanation, honestly… haha. It really had that fun feeling of grilling and combining things like you're actually camping. Since you can bring outside food too, I thought it'd be even more fun next time to bring along my favorite camping snacks.

Even after finishing the meal, there was so much to do that it felt almost a shame to leave. True to its name as an indoor camping spot, there's a Nintendo console and board games inside. There's also karaoke, so you can grab a mic and sing! It genuinely felt like showing up at a real campground and throwing a party, haha. The large screen keeps showing a campfire video, and just watching it quietly was oddly calming. You can also watch Netflix or YouTube, so we leaned back in the comfy chairs and relaxed watching videos too.

If the usual dinner-then-café date course has been feeling a little stale lately, a place like this might be just the thing! Getting that camping feeling right in the middle of Hongdae without driving all the way to Gapyeong — that was the biggest charm of TAGE Indoor Camping Hongdae Main Branch. Being able to enjoy that camping mood anytime, with no worries about weather or gear, was really satisfying, and I'm already planning to come back to try the games I missed and grill more delicious meat. :)
