Why Seommaeul for a restorative meal in Yuseong, Daejeon?
Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum (섬마을 아구찜&낙지볶음) is a seafood restaurant on Yuseong-daero in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, and this time I came for abalone galbi soup as a seasonal-change pick-me-up. When life gets busy, there are days when body and mind are both worn out and you just want a solid meal to comfort you. Especially when the seasons change or your energy dips, you look for food that grabs your appetite and is packed with nutrition too.
So I'd like to introduce a real restorative-food spot that Daejeon locals seem to keep to themselves. Yuseong-gu is a hub of research, housing and every kind of flavor in Daejeon, and Seommaeul sits in an easy-to-reach, comfortable spot there. It's a healing place that wins over all ages, not just with spicy, tangy seafood dishes but with deep, rich broth. I'll share the whole story, including the excitement of facing food made with real care and skill, not just something to fill your stomach.

Inside Seommaeul: atmosphere and cleanliness
The first thing you notice inside Seommaeul is how remarkably clean and tidy it is. There's also wide group seating, so it works well for company dinners and family events.

The floor is kept so hygienically it practically shines, and the tables, with wood and white tones in harmony, create a cozy, comfortable mood. One side of the wall has a large group area perfect for company dinners, club meetups and family events, so bigger parties can use it without any hassle.
The whole hall is laid out wide and open, so it never feels stuffy, and you can eat at leisure in the warm sunlight coming through the windows. Thorough hygiene alone sends my trust in a place soaring.
Seommaeul menu, prices and spice levels
Seommaeul's menu splits into braised dishes (jjim) like monkfish braise, monkfish-octopus braise and seafood braise, and meals like stir-fried octopus (₩14,000 for 2 or more people), abalone galbi soup (₩15,000) and pork bone hangover soup (₩10,000). The lineup is solid, from spicy, richly seasoned seafood dishes to hearty meals that fill you up with something hot and refreshing.

Choosing from four spice levels
One big plus of Seommaeul is that you can pick your spice level. There are four: mild / basic (Shin Ramyun level) / spicy (Buldak level) / extra spicy, so everyone from people who can't handle heat to fans of fiery food can be satisfied.
What side dishes does Seommaeul serve?
The basic side dishes at Seommaeul are neat and no-fuss: napa cabbage kimchi and seasoned soybean sprouts. They whet the appetite without getting in the way of the main dishes, a great supporting cast.

The cabbage kimchi is nicely fermented with deep savory flavor. It's crunchy, with cool juices bursting out as you chew, and it pairs best with soups and braised dishes.
The seasoned soybean sprouts carry the nutty scent of sesame oil, and they're blanched crisp with no fishy smell, so the taste is mild and clean rather than punchy. They also do a good job of softening the heat of the main dishes, a gentle but charming side.
Seommaeul's abalone galbitang: what 15,000 won gets you
The real star of the day was the abalone galbi soup (₩15,000) at Seommaeul. It brings together abalone, the restorative food of the sea, and galbi (short ribs), the restorative food of the land, in one bowl.
When the hot steam bubbles up from the bowl and the scent of rich broth spreads, your mouth starts watering all by itself.
① A large abalone that tastes of the sea
The abalone in Seommaeul's soup is large enough to feel hefty when you lift it with chopsticks, and it looks special from the first glance.

You can see the freshness with your own eyes. The abalone cooks softly in the soup with none of that usual toughness, tender yet chewy. One bite and the flavor of the sea fills your mouth and blends with the depth of the broth, which is impressive. You can feel the energy abalone gives as a restorative food.
② Tender short rib that melts in your mouth
Next to catch the eye is the galbi meat packed into the earthenware pot. It's cooked long enough that the bone and meat separate easily.

It's been simmered patiently for a long time and cooked perfectly. The rib meat tears softly along the grain, with not a trace of dryness, and it's full of juice.
Dip a thick piece lightly in the house sauce and it practically melts away before you can chew. There's no gamey smell at all, just a clean, rich meaty flavor lingering on the tongue, so anyone of any age can enjoy it without a divide in opinion.
③ A rich, deep broth worth every spoonful
After enjoying the meat and abalone, the finishing touch is pouring rice into the broth left at the bottom of the pot. The broth is clear yet milky from long simmering, and from the first spoonful it tastes like all your fatigue is melting away.

It has no artificial seasoning taste, just the deep, rich essence of the ingredients themselves, so good you hate to leave even the last drop.
Verdict: Seommaeul's abalone galbitang for a seasonal boost in Yuseong, Daejeon
Seommaeul was a Yuseong-gu, Daejeon restaurant that hit all three notes: a comfortable, clean space, friendly service, and fresh ingredients with real hand-made skill. It reminded me again that food is more than nutrition; it's a great comfort and happiness at the end of a tiring day.
Blowing off stress with spicy monkfish braise or stir-fried octopus is great, and so is getting your strength back with a rich, deep abalone galbi soup like the one I had today. If you're looking for truly tasty seafood or restorative food in Daejeon, I strongly recommend visiting Seommaeul this weekend with family, a partner or people you care about. A perfect, no-regrets meal is waiting for you!!
