Suwon fish restaurant, croaker & Mom's first mackerel sushi: Godeungeo
In short
Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is a Korean grilled fish restaurant on Seobu-ro in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. The writer and her mom ordered grilled croaker and 10-piece mackerel sushi on an early weekday evening, and Mom, trying raw mackerel for the first time, was pleased that it had no fishy taste. With a large parking lot, neat side dishes and a self-serve corner, Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda is a solid pick for a family meal with parents.

I once had really good grilled mackerel here, so after a long while I went back to Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch (고등어명품이되다 수원점)!

I like grilled fish and have tried many places, but this one stayed in my memory for its clean atmosphere and generous spread.

Even after a long gap, the meal was just as satisfying. The restaurant's own parking lot is very big, so parking is easy.

Still, on weekends even that big lot fills up. That's how good this grilled fish place is!
What are parking and waiting like at Godeungeo Suwon?
The dedicated parking lot is large and the restaurant itself is quite big. It is open 10:40–22:00 and has Naver reservations, group seating, high chairs and a waiting area.

The atmosphere is clean and upscale, so it works well for a family meal or a visit with your parents. The parking lot is especially roomy, which makes driving there easy.
I went on an early weekday evening and could eat at leisure, but at weekend mealtimes it gets crowded and you may have to wait. I waited last time, haha. If you plan to visit, I recommend booking through Naver so you don't have to wait.

There is also a separate waiting area inside, so even if you do wait, it's fairly comfortable.
What side dishes come at Godeungeo?

This time I ordered grilled croaker (mineo-gui) and mackerel sushi. Once you order, the table fills up with all sorts of side dishes~

There was a good variety, including japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), spicy stir-fried pork, stuffed cucumber kimchi, young radish kimchi and seasoned bellflower root (doraji) and other namul (seasoned vegetables), all neatly prepared.
The seasoning isn't harsh, so it feels healthy, and none of the dishes are divisive, so I kept reaching for each one~ Mom liked the seasoned bellflower root best.

The sweet-and-sour taste whetted her appetite, so she ended up going back to the self-serve corner for more. I loved the japchae too and picked at it again and again. The self-serve corner offers extra side dishes, plus sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) and seaweed soup, so the meal felt hearty.
That's why I recommend it as a Gwonseon-gu favorite~
How does the grilled croaker taste?

The grilled croaker came out golden brown and looked appetizing just by sight. It was bigger than I expected, and you could tell at a glance that it was generous.
The flesh was thick and moist, easy to pick off the bones, and the clean, mild flavor really came through.

It isn't salty, so it goes well with rice, and with the various side dishes it was even better. Visit yourself and you'll see why it's a steadily loved grilled fish spot in Suwon 👍
Won't the mackerel sushi taste fishy?
The mackerel sushi at Godeungeo Suwon was rich and nutty with no fishy taste, and Mom, who had never had mackerel sashimi, was happy with it. She'd never tried it, so I ordered it for her, but just from the name she said it sounded fishy and she didn't want any.

But once she tried it, she said it was nothing like that. The nutty richness was there, no fishiness at all, and it paired really well with the rice.

Maybe because it's fresh, the mackerel sashimi is so appealing, mild yet nutty. Ten pieces weren't even enough.. 😂

Mom was very happy, and we'll probably order the mackerel sashimi or sushi next time too 😆 I think it's an easy dish to try even for people who don't usually eat raw fish~
A Suwon grilled fish restaurant for a family meal with your parents

Once again I finished a very satisfying meal at Godeungeo Suwon. A big parking lot, a pleasant dining room, neat side dishes, generous grilled fish,, and even high chairs, so it has everything you need for a family meal.

If you're looking for a clean Korean restaurant to visit with your parents, I especially recommend it. I think people searching for a Homaesil or Gwonseon-gu favorite will be very happy with it.

The grilled mackerel I had before was good, but this grilled croaker and mackerel sushi beat my expectations too, so I'll be back. When you're craving grilled fish, enjoy a hearty meal at Godeungeo Suwon. If you like a tidy Korean spread, I'm sure you'll be happy :)
