Eel buffet for group dinners near Ansan City Hall: Songnim Bok

Songnim Bok Jangeo Freshwater Eel All-You-Can-Eat Ansan City Hall Direct Store is an all-you-can-eat charcoal grill restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Praum City building near Ansan City Hall in Gyeonggi, serving unlimited freshwater eel, pork belly and chicken neck. The writer paid 32,900 won per person (including a 3,000 won table charge) for up to 2 hours, grilled eel over charcoal and used the self-serve bar's kimchi jeon mix and raw eggs to make kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake) and fried eggs. With carefully cleaned eel free of small bones and a clean, newly opened dining room, Songnim Bok Jangeo is a solid pick for a group dinner in Gojan-dong.

Weekend lunch Korean BBQ at Samgakji Station: brisket ramyeon, Yukmong

Yukmong Yongsan Direct Store is a Korean pork (Handon) BBQ restaurant in Yongsan, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Samgakji Station. On a weekend lunch booked through Catchtable, the Handon mixed set came with snowflake pork collar, galbi pork belly, whole galmaegisal (pork skirt) and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), alongside caviar cheese steamed egg and brisket ramyeon. With thick cuts grilled by staff from start to finish and a hearty doenjang jjigae, Yukmong Yongsan Direct Store is best enjoyed by ordering the set menu.

Hannam-dong date spot: aged sashimi platter and free sushi, TATSU

TATSU SUSAN is an aged sashimi restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building on Daesagwan-ro 31-gil in Hannam-dong, Yongsan, Seoul. After booking on Naver, the writer sat at the counter facing the open kitchen and ordered the small aged sashimi platter set. The white fish, mackerel sashimi, raw abalone, side dishes such as gracilaria seaweed, kelp and sea squirt, the braised dish and the complimentary sushi were all clean-tasting with no fishy smell. TATSU SUSAN is a classy Hannam-dong date spot for sashimi and drinks.

Jongno noodle shop: scallion-oil noodles with guobaorou, Cheonghwa

Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon (청화 우육도삭면) is a Taiwanese beef noodle and dim sum restaurant on the first floor of the Le Meilleur Building in Jongno, Seoul. On a solo visit just after weekend lunchtime, the writer had yubal dosakmyeon, a brothless knife-cut noodle dish fragrant with scallion oil, and guobaorou (crispy Chinese sweet-and-sour pork); the chewy noodles and the guobaorou, which stayed crisp even in its sauce, were both satisfying. Wrapping the guobaorou in the yubal dosakmyeon made it a meal worth recommending.

Gojan New Town tteokbokki at max spice with cheese: Yum Bbokki

Yum Bbokki is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant near the Gojan New Town plaza in Ansan's Dangwon-gu, across from Hosu-dong Post Office, and the only branch in the country. Ordering at the in-store kiosk, I chose the Pujimi-yam set with rice-flour rice cakes, the spiciest of the four heat levels and an added cheese topping, then ate it with fried snacks, chewy sundae (blood sausage) and sweet cheese boneless chicken. For tteokbokki, fried snacks and chicken all on one table, nothing in Gojan-dong beats Yum Bbokki.
