Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch (화덕으로간고등어 비산점) is a place near Indeogwon where you can enjoy a full Korean meal centered on grilled fish. We were worried about the smell of grilling fish at home, so we eat out, and while looking for a good spot near Indeogwon we ended up here.

My "young forty" husband, a total Korean-food lover, starts every morning with Korean food. Today he suddenly said he wanted grilled fish... I worried about the smell of cooking it at home, so I talked him into eating out. And the name alone says they take grilled fish seriously!!

Once we got there, it was more than just grilled fish: you can eat it with lots of side dishes, so the table was richer than I expected. And my husband was ready to eat, as always!! He eats well anyway, but since he came to eat exactly what he wanted, he was so excited.

Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch sits in a fairly large building, and a big sign catches your eye from outside. Inside, it was spacious with plenty of tables.

It was packed with people~~ All the Korean-food lovers must have gathered here! The overall mood is bright, so it looked fine for a family meal and good for friends too.

When we eat out, the menu matters, but we also care about whether we can sit comfortably!! The reason: my husband can only show off his eating skills when his surroundings are relaxed. To an onlooker he looks less like he's here for a meal and more like he's here on important business~~

Besides grilled fish, Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch has several other Korean dishes such as jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) and eel. Because there is an unlimited self-serve bar, one meal per person is required, and children aged 7 and under must order too.

I thought it was only grilled fish, but the menu was pretty varied. We ordered the grilled mackerel set and the flame-grilled spicy pork set. My husband, who loves pork as much as fish, started dancing in his seat~~!!

Near Indeogwon Station: is there parking?

Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch is near Indeogwon Station and offers free parking. Getting around by car is easy, which is nice for family meals out.

What's in the self-serve side dish corner?

The self-serve bar at Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch had namul, japchae, crunchy chili peppers, ssam vegetables and more. This side dish corner was what I noticed most on this visit.

In Korean food the main dish matters, but the sides change how the whole meal feels, right? Grilled fish especially is all about eating rice and sides together, so I was happy to see these.

With the grilled mackerel set, the flame-grilled spicy pork set and the self-serve sides, the table was packed with a 14-dish spread (14-chop bansang) and the table legs nearly bent.... With grilled fish at the center plus other sides and dishes, that's good news for Korean food lovers~!!

How were the taste and grilling of the oven-grilled mackerel?

The mackerel at Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch came on a long plate, a big fish with clearly golden grill marks on the surface. Fish from an oven feels different from what you eat at home!! The place was clean with no acrid smell or smoke, and seeing the perfectly grilled mackerel was amazing~~

Grilling fish at home means getting out the pan, flipping, airing out the smell... just thinking about it makes me dizzy~~ The prep and cleanup take longer than eating. Getting fish already grilled at a restaurant, I like that there's none of that. And fish is best with rice!

My husband works hard even when eating fish. He picks the flesh off with chopsticks, eats it with rice, grabs sides in between, and watching him makes me oddly happy~~

Does the flame-grilled spicy pork go well with grilled mackerel?

The flame-grilled spicy pork at Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch was sweet and spicy, with a different charm from the mackerel. It looked appetizing and was really delicious. Alternating mild fish with the seasoned dish made my mouth happier than eating just one.

Why I refilled only the nurungji tea instead of rice

At Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch you can choose white or brown rice, and at the self-serve corner you can also take nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and ssam vegetables. Add a savory doenjang soup (soybean paste soup) and the table looks pretty hearty, doesn't it?

I skipped rice and kept refilling just this sungnyung. It warmed me up all the way through... My young-forty husband enjoyed the pork with lettuce.

Who is Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch right for?

Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch is a place where you can eat a meal centered on grilled fish with various Korean dishes and sides. It's worth considering if grilling fish at home is a hassle, or if you prefer Korean meals with rice and sides when eating out.

On the other hand, I felt it suits a Korean-style spread with lots laid out more than a quick single plate. It's fine for a couple like us and also good for a family meal.

This time we, a childless couple, were looking for Korean food in Indeogwon and ate at Hwaddeugeuro Bisan Branch. Golden grilled fish with lots of sides and other Korean dishes made for a different kind of meal out!!
