Seomyeon braised ribs, plain level 1 and gold-bowl fried rice: Sinchon

Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch is a yangpuni (metal-bowl) braised rib restaurant in Seomyeon, Busan, that says it has served only braised ribs in the same spot for 20 years. A writer who can't handle much spice ordered the plain braised ribs at spice level 1 with no toppings, then moved on to rice balls, a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) add-on and self-made fried rice. Sinchon Yangpuni's level 1 is mildly spicy and easy to eat, and extra heat can be added if it isn't spicy enough.

Seomyeon pasta restaurant in Busan: Friday wait and Toowoomba at Panna

Panna Seomyeon Main Branch is a pasta and rice bowl restaurant on the 2nd floor in the Jeonpo Cafe Street area of Seomyeon, Busan. After about a 20-minute wait on a Friday evening, the first-visit best-sellers, Toowoomba pasta (16,000 won) and the Panna beef belly rice bowl with wasabi (13,000 won), were both satisfying, with a pleasantly spicy Toowoomba sauce. Panna is small and food can come out slowly, so join the Catchtable waitlist ahead of time for dinner.

U-shaped teppanyaki counter in Seomyeon, Busan: Set A for two at Karen

Karen is a Taiwanese-style teppanyaki restaurant in the B1 food court of Lotte Department Store Busan Main Branch in Seomyeon, Busan. At Karen's U-shaped bar counter, the writer ordered the 2-person Set A: emperor short rib and pork neck grilled right in front of diners by a Taiwanese chef, served with white fish, teppan egg and stir-fried bean sprouts. Karen is an easy place to eat alone and a filling meal stop while shopping in Seomyeon.

Korean BBQ in Seomyeon, Busan: table set just like the display, Don J

Don J Busan Seomyeon is a Korean BBQ restaurant near the rear entrance of Lotte Department Store in Seomyeon, Busan, where staff grill the pork for you on a cast-iron cauldron lid. The writer ordered 600g of pork neck and belly for ₩38,000, plus highland kimchi stew and pork rice, and was impressed by the full spread of side dishes, which matched the model at the entrance, and by the homemade tonkatsu sauce. For generous, well-priced pork belly near Seomyeon Station, Don J Busan Seomyeon is a satisfying choice.

Gijang outlet restaurant, weekend dinner: kung pao pilaf, Bueokgan

Bueokgan (부엌간) is a Western restaurant with a vintage Italian-hotel feel on the first floor of Shinsegae Simon Busan Premium Outlets NORTH (the old building) in Gijang, Busan. After a weekend of shopping, the writer had dinner with kung pao chicken pilaf (22,000 won) and carbonara (19,000 won), and the large oven-roasted chicken drumstick paired well with the thick, rich cream sauce. For a stylish Western dinner at the Gijang outlets, Bueokgan's pilaf-and-pasta combination is a solid recommendation.

Seomyeon Korean BBQ with a glass-front street-tent vibe: 189 Cheolsune

189 Cheolsune Matgimchi Samgyeopsal (189철수네맛김치삼겹살) is a kimchi pork belly restaurant in Seomyeon, Busan, and the writer says the Seomyeon branch is the only one in Busan. The writer grilled the 450g kimchi pork belly (₩35,900, for 2–3 people) with bean sprouts, mushrooms and potatoes from the self bar, then finished with a meaty doenjang (soybean paste) stew for ₩5,000 and soju. With floor-to-ceiling windows that feel like a Korean street-tent bar, 189 Cheolsune is a good spot to enjoy fresh Iberico pork with kimchi from a kimchi master.
