What kind of bakery is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch?

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch (만동제과 연남점) is a bakery near the main road in Yeonnam-dong, at 32 Yeonhui-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. If you're serious about bread, it's a legendary bakery hotspot you can't skip in Seoul.

Mandong Jegwa got hugely famous in Gangneung for its garlic baguette and its one-of-a-kind textures, and even after opening in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, it still has opening-time queues and long waits. It's a classic Hongdae must-eat. I kept telling myself I'd go someday, and the timing finally worked out, so I headed over for takeout, excited to try the signature breads. ✨
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch parking and directions

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch has no dedicated parking, and I'd recommend walking from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station. Because of the location, the shop has no spare parking space, so if you're coming by car for takeout, check the nearby Yeonnam-dong public parking lot or shared parking in the area first. It's an easy, almost leisurely walk from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station, so I'd suggest just taking the subway! 👍

Walking from the station toward Yeonnam-dong Café Street or Gyeongui Line Forest Park, you'll easily spot Mandong Jegwa near a corner on the main road.

The exterior has an old wood-toned sign, stylishly weathered by time, with the Chinese character for "bread" (빵) written big and honest, so you can spot it from far away.

As a famous Yeonnam-dong bakery, it usually has a long line stretching out into the alley at peak times, and the sweet, nutty smell of butter drifting out from inside is so tempting that passersby stop in their tracks.
What is inside Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch like?

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is not a spacious bakery café but a compact takeout-only shop where you pick your bread, pay and go. Step inside and the smell of baking bread fills the whole place, delighting every sense. 👀 Customers choose from neatly displayed breads, pay right away and leave. That's the whole format.

Is there still bread at Mandong Jegwa at 5pm?
When I got to Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch around 5pm, many of the popular signature items were already sold out and the shelves looked a bit empty. It's a bread pilgrimage site where bread lovers gather from all over the country, so going late often means the breads you want are sold out.

I felt a little disappointed, but luckily the cappuccino bread, the signature I really wanted to try, was still in stock, so I put it on my tray with relief. To enjoy the full range of breads, I'd recommend going early in the day.
Mandong Jegwa menu and generous free samples

Looking at the menu and display, the lineup is original and full of character, the kind you rarely see at ordinary chain bakeries.

From the bestselling moist garlic baguette to the chewy onion bagel, there are plenty of signature breads that catch your eye from the first look.

Above all, Mandong Jegwa is known for the staff cutting big, generous samples while you choose. You can taste and pick to your liking, so there's virtually no chance of choosing wrong. Honestly, I had just stuffed myself with pasta on my own and was so full, and the staff's endless sample temptations nearly made me burst, hahaha.
4 breads to take home from Mandong Jegwa

That day I took home four breads from Mandong Jegwa: cappuccino bread, mugwort tteok bread, injeolmi and cacao coconut. Despite the many sellouts at that late hour, I filled my order with the cappuccino bread I was most looking forward to, plus the healthy-tasting, chewy mugwort tteok bread (쑥떡쑥떡), the nuttiest-of-the-nutty injeolmi (roasted soybean powder rice cake flavor), and the bittersweet cacao coconut. 😋
- Cappuccino bread: the signature I was most looking forward to
- Mugwort tteok bread (쑥떡쑥떡): healthy yet chewy
- Injeolmi: the ultimate nutty flavor
- Cacao coconut: bittersweet flavor
What does Mandong Jegwa cappuccino bread taste like?

Think of Mandong Jegwa's cappuccino bread as a fancy coffee-cream version of a chewy, soft white roll cream bread. The first one I tried, the big moment, drew a heartfelt gasp at the first bite! You know the super soft, chewy "white roll cream bread" that's trending at bakeries these days, right? It's exactly that texture.

The surface is generously coated with fragrant cappuccino coffee powder, and inside it's packed with moist cream that doesn't slide around in your mouth.

It goes down soft and light, and the balance between the sticky chew of the dough and the subtle coffee aroma was just art. It isn't overly sweet, so it never gets cloying, and I finished it in no time in one sitting. 👍
Is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch worth a return visit?

From the neat packaging to the flawless, one-of-a-kind texture and flavor of every bread, I was very satisfied with Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, with nothing lacking. If you love bread, it's a must-include bakery whenever you walk the alleys of Yeonnam-dong.
