Seomyeon's first mille-feuille nabe bar in Busan: Mokhwa Silbi

In short

Mokhwa Silbi (목화실비) is a Korean pub serving food in Seomyeon, Busan, which has held its spot for 10 years and is said to be the first place in Seomyeon to serve mille-feuille nabe (layered cabbage and meat hot pot). The writer and their partner ordered the mille-feuille nabe with a rice noodle add-on and a shrimp chive pancake. The beer-loving partner drank 2 bottles of Terra, while the writer, who prefers sweet drinks, had 1 bottle of Simsul and a lemon tower highball. With a generous mille-feuille nabe and a crispy shrimp chive pancake, Mokhwa Silbi is a good-value Seomyeon bar worth recommending.

What kind of bar is Mokhwa Silbi in Seomyeon?

Today I'm at Mokhwa Silbi, a bar in Seomyeon!! It has been holding down the center of Seomyeon for a whole 10 years.

Mille-feuille nabe (layered hot pot) is easy to find at most bars these days, but Mokhwa Silbi is the place that first introduced it in Seomyeon!

Inside Mokhwa Silbi: which seats are best?

The space is split into two areas: a calm inner indoor room and an outdoor-style area near the entrance. Personally, the writer liked the entrance area more.

The inner room has slightly dim lighting and a calm mood. A cozy indoor bar feel?

The lighting isn't too bright, so it seemed great for chatting over a drink.

The entrance area has a totally different vibe. The walls are made of some kind of vinyl?, so you can see everything outside, and part of the ceiling is open. Even though you're sitting indoors, it feels like drinking outdoors.

With lights shining over the ceiling and plants and wood mixed in, it even feels like an outdoor terrace~ Personally, I liked the entrance area best.

Mokhwa Silbi's mille-feuille nabe: portion and taste

The mille-feuille nabe arrives with the pot packed full, and it was quite a generous amount for two. It comes with chili sauce and soy sauce, and you can finish with a rice noodle add-on once you've eaten everything.

Here comes the star of the day, the mille-feuille nabe! The look alone was really pretty.

First look at Mokhwa Silbi's mille-feuille nabe

The pot was filled to the brim. With sweet pumpkin added, it was colorful and looked so appetizing!

Once the hot broth started bubbling, the ingredients cooked and their flavor seeped into the soup, so it got tastier the longer it boiled.

Above all, the portion is really generous... When I first saw the pot I thought there was already quite a lot in it, but once we started eating, it felt like it never got smaller no matter how much we ate. It was quite a hearty amount for two.

The meat wasn't tough but tender, easy to eat without feeling heavy, and I liked the variety of mushrooms in it too.

The nabe comes with chili sauce and soy sauce. Both were tasty, so it was nice alternating between them depending on your mood.

How was the side dish, the shrimp chive pancake?

The shrimp chive pancake (buchujeon) is cooked right after you order, so it arrived piping hot. It's crispy outside and topped with plump shrimp, and I recommend pairing it with the mille-feuille nabe.

I took one bite and the crunch was really good. The outside is crispy, and inside the scent of chives rises up gently.

With plump shrimp on top, every bite had a springy texture. My partner said it was five hundred times better than the scallion pancake we recently made at home,,, as expected, pancakes are best bought.

If you visit Mokhwa Silbi, I personally recommend the mille-feuille nabe and shrimp chive pancake combo.

What did a couple with different drink tastes order?

My beer-loving partner had two bottles of Terra, and I, who like sweet drinks, had one bottle of Simsul. The final palate cleanser was Mokhwa Silbi's lemon tower highball.

My partner and I have slightly different drink tastes, so we each picked what we like. My beer-fan partner polished off two beers with the shrimp chive pancake and the nabe broth.

I like sweet drinks, so I finished a bottle of Simsul in no time!

Lemon tower highball: one downside

I ordered the lemon tower highball as a palate cleanser. As time passed and the frozen lemon slowly started to melt, it got much tastier.

But even after I finished the drink, the lemon on top still looked brand new, so I think a taller glass would be better!

Finishing the mille-feuille nabe with rice noodles

After you've fished out all the meat and vegetables from Mokhwa Silbi's mille-feuille nabe, just ask for the rice noodles. The portion of noodles was bigger than expected, and they even refilled the broth!

The nabe alone is a lot of food, and with rice noodles added too, the value is really great.

Who is Mokhwa Silbi for?

I recommend Mokhwa Silbi in Seomyeon to anyone looking for a bar there, especially those who want to quietly enjoy a drink in a nice atmosphere.
