Fresh-noodle yukgaejang kalguksu near Wonju Bus Terminal: Yukdaejang

Yukdaejang Dangye Musil-jeom is a 24-hour yukgaejang (spicy beef and vegetable soup) restaurant on Roanoke-ro near Wonju Bus Terminal and AK Plaza in Wonju, Gangwon. After checking out of their hotel, the writer stopped by with her children and ordered yukgaejang kalguksu with fresh noodles, cha-dol brisket yukgaejang and a large hanbang bossam (herb-braised pork), all so loaded that the toppings seemed to outweigh the noodles. Yukdaejang Dangye Musil-jeom covers both an early hangover breakfast and a full family meal in one stop.

Paju Korean restaurant with stone-pot rice and garden views: Simhaksan

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap is a ssambap (rice and side dishes wrapped in leaf vegetables) and set-menu Korean restaurant near the Paju publishing complex and Lotte Premium Outlets in Gyeonggi. Just after the weekday lunch rush, the writer and her mother shared the deuljeongsik set — stir-fried pork, stir-fried squid, doenjang stew, gangdoenjang and stone-pot rice — in a hall with floor-to-ceiling windows facing landscaped trees, helping themselves to the self-serve wrap-vegetable bar and side dishes. The stone-pot rice was good enough that her mother was the first to say she wanted to return to Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap.
