Why I picked up spicy gamjatang in Ingye-dong

On my way home from work in the evening, I was craving spicy gamjatang (pork bone soup) but wanted to eat comfortably at home, so I went looking for somewhere to get takeout and found Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk (얼큰한뼈해장국)! It was so delicious, just like the name says, that I had to write about it.

Restaurant basics

  • Location: Inside Ingye-dong Box in Suwon, near Suwon City Hall Station.
  • Hours: Looking at it now, it was a 24-hour restaurant! But since it operates only until 9 a.m. on Tuesday and opens at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, I think Tuesday may be its day off.
  • Signature dishes: Ppyeo haejangguk (pork bone hangover soup) and ppyeo jeongol (pork bone hot pot; the same as gamjatang).
  • Price range: From the ₩10,000 range.
  • What stands out: Great for solo diners, and it gets a seriously high volume of delivery orders! I went for takeout, and there was enough for more than two meals, with everything given generously. The best for people living alone ㅠㅠ

Small ppyeo jeongol takeout: three meals for one

I got a small discount on my takeout order, and it was so ridiculously good that I would come back... If you like spicy gamjatang, this is where you should go.

Parking and menu made takeout easy

First of all, Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk is inside Ingye-dong Box, and the fact that it has two hours of free parking is so nice. Ingye-dong is difficult enough when you drive there, but this makes takeout really, really easy! You can also briefly park in front of the restaurant. (You will get ticketed if you stay over five minutes.)

The menu is this simple, and like at any gamjatang restaurant, almost everything is available for takeout. Lots of people were having ppyeo haejangguk and seonji haejangguk (ox-blood hangover soup), and there were quite a few group diners too! It is clearly the kind of great restaurant that goes perfectly with soju, hahaha. I ordered a small ppyeo jeongol to go and asked for the spicy version because I wanted something hot. (Fried rice is not available for takeout ㅠ!)

Inside: a screen and a free ice cream event

The interior is exactly what you would expect from a gamjatang restaurant. But the important thing is! There is a screen... haha. So, so good. This is somewhere I would want to come when I am craving soju while watching baseball.

And, kind of cutely ㅠㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ, there is also a free ice cream event when you dine in! The number you get varies by what you order, but it is the best after drinking, right...?

There is a really wide selection of alcohol and a self-serve banchan (side-dish) bar. Maybe because there are so many delivery orders, ingredients such as kkakdugi radish kimchi and onions were all stocked to the brim. Lots of alcohol options too, and clearly a delivery favorite.

Ppyeo jeongol with broth and ingredients packed separately

I mean, I ordered the small size, hahaha, and it was heavy from the moment I carried it home...? Then I looked inside and it was truly packed with ingredients. The broth came separately too, which was clean and nice. Oh, and the kkakdugi here is amazing.

First I put in just the meat, and it is that much, though you probably cannot tell the scale, right? This is a really big pot... and I had only added bean sprouts plus six bone pieces so far.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha hahaha, can you see it? I had not even added the broth yet... and it completely filled my IKEA pot...

The siraegi (dried radish greens) ㅠㅠ came separately, and it was seriously so good. Once I added it and let everything bubble away, the quantity was this much. Hahaha. There were potatoes and bean sprouts too, and after adding everything, it felt like more than five liters... This is the place for spicy, clean-tasting gamjatang with substantial ingredients: Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk in Ingye-dong!

The pieces of meat were wonderfully big, so I think I will often get takeout here when I want a warm, hearty dinner!

What I liked and what was a little disappointing

What I liked

  • It is a great Korean restaurant for solo dining, takeout, and groups, so I think it would be good with anyone.
  • All the ingredients are substantial, and I liked that you can adjust the spice level.
  • The screen would make it a good place to come watch sports too.
  • The interior is generally very clean!

What was a little disappointing

There were so many delivery orders that I waited quite a while. I thought, maybe it is popular for a reason? Hahaha, and yes, it was! It was probably because the owner seemed to be working alone after 10 p.m. and the orders all came in at once.
