Nahonsha is a solo shabu-shabu and sukiyaki restaurant on Dongmak-ro in Mapo, Seoul, between Hapjeong Station and Sangsu Station. Sitting at a window seat with a companion, the writer ordered the clear broth shabu (₩14,900) and the Hon sukiyaki (₩16,900), watched a baseball game on the phone stand at each seat and refilled the clear broth twice. Nahonsha is a quiet Hapjeong spot that works well for eating dinner alone after work.

Gangnam wine bar for a rainy-day anniversary date: Luna Vine

Luna Vine is a wine bar on Nonhyeon-ro 149-gil in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, with 60 wines, an outdoor terrace and group seating. On an anniversary date at Luna Vine, the writer had a whisky highball and an Earl Grey highball with roast chicken (28,000 won) and aglio e olio, and enjoyed the friendly staff, the generous space between tables and the rainy-day atmosphere. Luna Vine is a Gangnam wine bar with reasonably priced food that makes an anniversary feel special.

Mapo Station izakaya for an anniversary date: Yakitori Shomong

Yakitori Shomong Mapo Station Branch is a yakitori izakaya near Exit 3 of Mapo Station in Seoul that specializes in special chicken cuts. On an anniversary date at a window table for two, the blogger had the 6-skewer omakase course (₩25,800 per person) and the classic yakisoba, and the meal was more filling than expected. Mullae izakaya: scissor-cut okonomiyaki & pork jowl at Akai Teppan

Akai Teppan is a Japanese teppanyaki bar in Mullae Arts Village in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, serving okonomiyaki, teppan grills, nabe and yakisoba with highballs, sours and sake. After a workout, I came in hungry and ordered the Akai okonomiyaki (₩18,000) and the pork jowl teppan grill (₩15,000); the okonomiyaki was so thick and generous it had to be cut with scissors. Verdict: Akai Teppan is a great Mullae date-night bar for hearty teppanyaki in a Japanese neighborhood izakaya atmosphere.

Group dinner BBQ buffet in Yeongjong, Incheon: Set C for 2, Jangsodam

Jangsodam Yeongjong Direct Store (장소담 영종직영점) is an all-you-can-eat eel, beef and pork BBQ restaurant in Haneul City, Yeongjong, Incheon. On a weekend visit right at opening, the blogger ordered Set C for 2 (₩64,000) and had yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), 6 cuts of beef, chestnut pork belly from the self-serve bar, market-style tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), Neoguri from the Hangang-style ramyeon machine and soft-serve ice cream. Verdict: at ₩30,000-something per person covering meat, buffet, ramyeon and dessert, Jangsodam Yeongjong is a great-value all-you-can-eat spot.

Tteum Café by Oneplay Suwon Station (띰 카페 바이 원플레이 수원역점) is a quiet dessert café in Suwon, on the way from the Suwon Station Transfer Center toward KCC Mall. Catching up with a friend over an Americano, a café latte and an ice cream croffle, the writer was struck by the table service and the axe-shaped cutlery. For an unhurried conversation near Suwon Station, Tteum Café by Oneplay Suwon Station is a calm place to recommend.

Dangsan pizza pub with spinach pizza and mocha stout: Long Time No See

Long Time No See Dangsan Branch is a pizza and chicken pub on the 2nd floor right by Exit 12 of Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, where you tag a wristband and self-pour from 29 craft beers. On a weekday around 5pm, the writer ordered the ₩31,900 pizza-chicken set with the signature Long Time No See (spinach & tomato) pizza, plus Hanmaek and a mocha stout; the chicken came to about 0.8 of a bird and the pizza was cut into 16 easy slices. With good food, friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere, Long Time No See Dangsan Branch is a pizza-and-beer spot the writer would 100% revisit.

Mangwon Station taco spot, rest-stop diner vibes and fajitas: Taco Dot

Taco Dot Mangwon Market Main Branch is a Mexican restaurant near Mangwon Market in Mapo, Seoul, a 4-minute walk from Mangwon Station Exit 2. The writer arrived right after break time ended and ordered the grilled meat fajita platter, which came with so much shrimp and meat that it couldn't be finished. The red-and-yellow interior, which feels like a highway rest-stop diner abroad, was the writer's favorite part. Verdict: Taco Dot is a generous Mangwon taco spot for a date or a meal with friends.

Insa-dong gomtang restaurant with gugak-style K-pop BGM: Wolhadong

Wolhadong is a Korean restaurant specializing in clear-broth pork gomtang (pork soup) in the Ssamziegil alley of Insa-dong, Jongno, Seoul. Sitting at the bar table and guessing recent pop songs played in gugak (traditional Korean music) versions, the writer ate the Wolha Gomtang (12,000 won) with cheonggeunjang sauce and chili oil, then lifted the bowl to finish the clean, mild broth. Wolhadong suits anyone near Anguk Station looking for a bowl of clear gomtang with both atmosphere and good value.

Sindorim kalguksu restaurant: ₩9,000 large bossam upgrade, Sambaekga

Sindorim Sambaekga is a Korean restaurant serving jokbal (braised pig's trotters), bossam (boiled pork wraps) and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) on the first floor of the Sindorim Prugio 1st Complex shopping arcade in Guro, Seoul. On a weekend early evening, the wait at Sindorim Sambaekga was 10 minutes before getting an inner table, and the bossam kalguksu set was ordered with an extra ₩9,000 to upgrade the bossam to large. Between the thick, rich kalguksu broth, bossam kept warm on a burner to the last bite and barley rice from the self-serve bar, Sindorim Sambaekga delivers a generous full-table spread.

With most dishes priced in the 10,000-won range and a calm, roomy setting, Two Find Peter Beomgye Branch is a solid pick for a date or a blind date.

Blueberry ade and a yakisoba set at a Songdo teppan restaurant: Jojo

Jojo Triple Street Branch is a teppanyaki restaurant on the 1st floor of Building C, Triple Street, in Songdo, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. On a late weekday dinner visit, the signature set for two was swapped to jojo yakisoba and served with okonomiyaki, donpeiyaki and a blueberry ade. Every table at Jojo has its own griddle, so the food stayed hot to the last bite, and the set pricing was reasonable.
