Lunch-only noodle shop in Suseong, Daegu: 2 PM visit, Daeheungmyeonok

In short

Daeheungmyeonok (대흥면옥) is a lunch-only Korean noodle restaurant on Cheongsu-ro in Suseong, Daegu, serving milmyeon (chewy wheat noodles) and makguksu (buckwheat noodles). On a first visit around 2 PM, after the lunch rush, the writer ordered mul-bibim milmyeon (spicy wheat noodles in cold broth), godi tteokguk (rice cake soup with freshwater snails) and steamed mandu (dumplings), and especially liked the nutty godi tteokguk and the mildly seasoned mul-bibim milmyeon. Daeheungmyeonok is a reasonably priced Suseong lunch spot where milmyeon and seasonal dishes share the menu.

I visited Daeheungmyeonok (대흥면옥), the legendary lunch-only restaurant in Suseong, Daegu, famous for really good milmyeon (wheat cold noodles). You can get milmyeon and makguksu (buckwheat noodles) here, plus godi tteokguk (rice cake soup made with godi, freshwater snails) and godi kalguksu in the colder months. It was my first visit, and the milmyeon was great, but the godi tteokguk was especially nutty and comforting, exactly my style.

Daeheungmyeonok is at 49-8 Cheongsu-ro, Suseong-gu, Daegu (1st floor). It is open only for lunch, 10:30 to 15:00 (last order 14:40), and closed every Monday. Being lunch-only is a big part of why it's so well known among Suseong lunch spots!

There's room for one or two cars in front of the restaurant.

When is the wait shortest at Daeheungmyeonok?

We got there around 2 PM, after the peak, so we could eat in peace. At peak lunch hours, you have to be ready to wait for a table at this Suseong lunch favorite.

Daeheungmyeonok menu: milmyeon, makguksu and winter dishes

Daeheungmyeonok sells milmyeon and makguksu, plus a kids' menu of house-made tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) and pork cutlet. In the colder months there's also godi kalguksu and godi tteokguk! Prices aren't steep, so it's a place you can drop into any time. They use both domestic Korean beef (hanwoo) and Australian beef, so the ingredient quality is pretty good too!

We ordered mul-bibim milmyeon, godi tteokguk and mandu (dumplings). You order on the tablet (Hi-Order) at your table, which was nice and convenient!

How are the steamed mandu at Daeheungmyeonok?

The steamed mandu came out first. They aren't made in-house, but the wrappers were chewy and tasty. A little something to take the edge off our hunger. A satisfying side dish.

What does Daeheungmyeonok's godi tteokguk (snail rice cake soup) taste like?

The godi tteokguk came out right away too. The whole table was filled up!

The godi tteokguk here is outstanding in its nutty flavor. It has egg garnish (jidan) and rice cakes, and I think the godi was ground and mixed in. It was a tteokguk unlike what you get elsewhere. I went for the milmyeon and ended up discovering another delicious dish, which is the best.

There are so many rice cakes in it that one bowl really fills you up. So filling! It's the kind of dish I want to eat again today. It's one of those days when I'm craving that delicious godi tteokguk.

What is mul-bibim milmyeon at Daeheungmyeonok?

Mul-bibim milmyeon sits between bibim milmyeon (spicy mixed noodles) and mul milmyeon (noodles in cold broth), and my wife ordered it. The seasoning isn't strong and it blends well with the savory depth of the broth, so the taste was satisfying. You get the best of both bibim and mul milmyeon, which is why I always prefer this one.

The sweet-and-sour, deeply savory broth and seasoning spread through your mouth, and it's just moving. With such a low price, it can't help but be even more satisfying.

Eaten with the beef, crunchy cucumber and radish, the texture is special and even more enjoyable. The harmony of savory seasoning and fresh ingredients really stands out at this Suseong lunch spot, Daeheungmyeonok!

Verdict on a first lunch at Daeheungmyeonok in Suseong, Daegu

This was my first time at Daeheungmyeonok as a Suseong, Daegu lunch spot. You get tasty milmyeon at a reasonable price, and the side dishes are well done too. Just remember it's open only for lunch, so time your visit well. The winter seasonal godi tteokguk was really delicious too.
