Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch (맛동삼 범어본점) is a pork belly BBQ restaurant in a converted house in Beomeo-dong, Suseong, Daegu. On a first visit the writer waited about 15 minutes, then ordered one portion each of ogyeopsal (skin-on pork belly), jjondeuksal (chewy pork cut) and gabrisal (pork neck-edge) with a 300cc draft beer; the first bite of pork belly with salt and the jjondeuksal with salted herring roe stood out. Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch is a Beomeo-dong pork belly spot worth waiting for.

Daegu Chinese restaurant: Uljin crab fried rice & kanpunggi, Jjammadam

Jjammadam is a Chinese restaurant in front of the Kyungpook National University main gate in Buk-gu, Daegu, where good prices and tasty food draw peak-hour lines of students and staff. After a day of water play, the family ordered squid jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), Uljin snow crab fried rice and a small kanpunggi (spicy garlic fried chicken) for 40,000 won in total. The smoky jjamppong, the fried rice topped with crab meat and crab innard sauce, and the kanpunggi made with Korean chicken and no off smell were all satisfying. For a Chinese restaurant near the Kyungpook National University main gate that doesn't skimp on ingredients, Jjammadam is a good choice.

Family BBQ set in Chilgok with Han River ramen: Yaksamgol Garden

Yaksamgol Garden (약샘골가든) is an outdoor Korean BBQ restaurant in Yakmok-myeon, Chilgok, Gyeongbuk, where pork belly, pork neck and duck are grilled on a stone plate heated over a wood fire. Four adults and two children shared the Yaksamgol Garden full set (pork belly, pork neck, duck, sausage and shrimp) and had food left over, then finished with roasted sweet potatoes, 3,000-won Han River ramen and 1,000-won doenjang stew. With soju and beer at 4,000 won, Yaksamgol Garden is a long-running Yakmok BBQ spot well suited to an open-air family barbecue party.

Lunch-only noodle shop in Suseong, Daegu: 2 PM visit, Daeheungmyeonok

Daeheungmyeonok (대흥면옥) is a lunch-only Korean noodle restaurant on Cheongsu-ro in Suseong, Daegu, serving milmyeon (chewy wheat noodles) and makguksu (buckwheat noodles). On a first visit around 2 PM, after the lunch rush, the writer ordered mul-bibim milmyeon (spicy wheat noodles in cold broth), godi tteokguk (rice cake soup with freshwater snails) and steamed mandu (dumplings), and especially liked the nutty godi tteokguk and the mildly seasoned mul-bibim milmyeon. Daeheungmyeonok is a reasonably priced Suseong lunch spot where milmyeon and seasonal dishes share the menu.

Shoe and bag cleaner in Beomeo, Daegu: greasy Porter bag at Cleanmate

Cleanmate Beomeo (클린메이트 범어점) is a shoe and bag cleaning and leather restoration shop in Beomeo-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu. The writer left Cleanmate Beomeo a Porter bag with two years of built-up grease, plus Onitsuka Tiger shoes, golf shoes and Nike sneakers, and the Porter bag came back wrapped and looking brand new. If you want a well-loved bag or leather shoes properly revived, Cleanmate Beomeo is worth considering.

Kimchi-grilled pork belly buffet in Chilgok, Daegu: Ganeun Galbi

Ganeun Galbi Taejeon-jeom is an all-you-can-eat pork BBQ restaurant in Taejeon-dong (Chilgok), Buk-gu, Daegu, near Daegu Health College. On a dinner with coworkers, the writer grilled fresh pork belly with kimchi, drank somaek (soju mixed with beer), then moved on to pork makchang (intestines) and spicy Jin Ramyeon from the self bar, and found the meat quality good for an all-you-can-eat place. Ganeun Galbi Taejeon-jeom is a good choice for anyone looking for a work dinner or group gathering spot in Chilgok.

Pohang crab restaurant: abalone mulhoe and free octopus, Yeonggwang

Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center is a sashimi and snow crab restaurant on Jukdosijang-gil, by Jukdo Market in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. With domestic snow crab out of season, the writer and a coworker ordered the imported Russian Bakdal Special for 2 around 5 p.m. The meal came with side dishes, live flounder and rockfish sashimi, mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) topped with abalone, complimentary steamed octopus and scallops, spicy fish stew and crab ramyeon. The verdict: even in the snow crab off-season, Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center's big Russian crab and generous spread make it a good place to enjoy sashimi, mulhoe and crab in one meal.

Noodle shop's mul-bibim naengmyeon in Daegu: Golmok Naengmyeon 1966

Golmok Naengmyeon 1966 Daegu is a naengmyeon (Korean cold noodle) and handmade dumpling restaurant on Deuran-gil in Suseong, Daegu, opened by Golmok Naengmyeon from Geumho-dong in Seoul. Daegu steak restaurant: ₩70,000 tenderloin set with a child, Etrenne

Etrenne Jukjeon Branch (에트렌느 죽전점) is a Western restaurant on the ground floor of the World Mark West End shopping complex near Jukjeon Station in Dalseo, Daegu. On a weekday evening, the writer and a child shared the ₩70,000 tenderloin steak set: tenderloin steak, aglio olio pasta, salad, Bundaberg and cola. The child ate almost all of the medium-well tenderloin steak, which was served on a stone plate. With easy parking and tasty food, Etrenne Jukjeon Branch is a reliable Western restaurant for a date or a family meal.
