Suncheon cockle restaurant menu prices and vine terrace: Dowongyeong

With the cool autumn breeze blowing, I suddenly wanted to just run off somewhere, so I took a trip to Suncheon.

The first thing I thought when I got to Suncheon was that I had to try a proper cockle set meal (kkomak jeongsik), full of generous southern Korean home cooking. So I went to Dowongyeong (도원경), a Suncheon Korean restaurant that people line up for and that is famous by word of mouth for its cockle set meal. I'll write up my honest review of the full spread I tried.

Where is Dowongyeong, and what are the hours and parking?

Dowongyeong is at 309 Suncheonman-gil, Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do, and it's open every day from 10:00 to 21:00 (last order 20:00). It's a 3-minute drive from Suncheon Bay Wetland, so it fits the route perfectly.

Dowongyeong atmosphere: green vine terrace and hanok-style hall

Dowongyeong has a terrace with seating covered in vines outside, and a hanok-style (traditional Korean house) main hall inside. When I stepped in, the space was much bigger and more charming than I expected.

On the outer terrace, green vines fill the ceiling and walls and blend with the wooden roof beams, so it feels like sitting inside a cozy outdoor greenhouse. The classic ceiling lights and the ship's-wheel-style decor pieces add a warm, nostalgic feel.

Inside the main hall, there were lattice windows patterned like traditional Korean doors and calm wooden tables neatly arranged. It's a tidy, comfortable layout, good for group gatherings or family meals around one table. The staff greeted us kindly too, so the first impression was really relaxing.

Dowongyeong cockle set meal menu and prices

The Dowongyeong cockle set meal is ₩30,000 per person, and the cockle set with mudskipper soup is ₩35,000 per person. Set meals are one per person, and you need to order for at least 2 people.

As soon as I walked in, I read through the menu slowly. It says every dish is homemade with care.

The cockle set includes a variety of cockle dishes: cockle hamburg steak, cockle sweet-and-sour pork (tangsuyuk), cockle jeonbyeong (crispy rolls), seasoned raw cockle salad, cockle jeon (savory pancake), and seasoned blood cockles.

We ordered the Dowongyeong cockle set meal for 2, the one that comes with the hearty stew. The total was ₩60,000.

In autumn, the window seats at Dowongyeong look out over ripening yellow rice fields. When I sat down at the table we were shown to, I couldn't help gasping at the view outside the window. The rice was ripening gold in the autumn sun and stretched out endlessly, and just looking at it opened up my chest and felt so healing.

What side dishes come with Dowongyeong's cockle set?

The Dowongyeong cockle set comes with southern-style side dishes laid out in white ceramic bowls, like cockle and quail egg jangjorim (soy-braised side dish), mustard leaf kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, seasoned raw crab (yangnyeom gejang), and seasoned small crabs.

While we were chatting, the neat side dishes were laid out on the table. First, the cockle and quail egg jangjorim had plump eggs with carrot and onion, and it wasn't strong at all, just gently sweet. Chewy cockle meat was tucked right into the soy braise too, which made it fun to chew.

The sharp mustard leaf kimchi and napa cabbage kimchi, essentials of a southern Korean table, were crunchy and rice-stealing. The seasoning had soaked in deeply, so the savory flavor filled my mouth.

The spicy-sweet seasoned crab had shells that weren't too tough and meat packed full, and the crispy seasoned small crabs popped with nutty flavor the more I crunched.

How do the cockle dishes taste at Dowongyeong?

The mains of the Dowongyeong cockle set were cockle doenjang stew, cockle jeon, fried cockle jeonbyeong, cockle sweet-and-sour pork, seasoned raw cockle salad, and cockle hamburg steak, filling the whole table.

Cockle doenjang stew and cockle jeon

While I was tasting the basic side dishes, the main cockle dishes I'd been waiting for arrived, filling the table. The cockle doenjang (soybean paste) stew came bubbling in a earthenware pot, generously loaded with cockles, zucchini and tofu in a savory homemade doenjang broth that tasted clean and a little spicy. Eaten with cockle bibimbap, it was an absolutely perfect match.

The golden cockle jeon on a big plate hit my nose with its nutty smell first. The edges were crispy and the inside was soft with egg and chives, and plump whole cockles were studded all through it. When I tore off a big piece with chopsticks and took a bite, the salty cockle juices filled my mouth.

Fried cockle jeonbyeong and cockle sweet-and-sour pork

The fried cockle jeonbyeong, wrapped in a rice paper net and fried crisp, looked really unique. Inside the thin crispy coating, it was packed with minced cockle filling and a fragrant perilla leaf aroma.

When I dipped it in the tangy sauce, the richness vanished and it felt like eating something fancy.

The glossy cockle sweet-and-sour pork was a treat too. The coating was chewy and the sweet-and-sour sauce clung to it, a flavor anyone, young or old, would like.

Raw cockle salad bibimbap and cockle hamburg steak

The seasoned raw cockle salad in bright red sauce was generosity itself. Plump cockle meat was tossed with fresh vegetables, and it wasn't overly strong; the balance of sour, sweet and spicy seasoning was fantastic.

I put rice in a big bowl, piled on seaweed flakes and lots of the cockle salad, and mixed it up, and a whole bowl of rice vanished in the blink of an eye.

The cockle hamburg steak came warm on an iron plate, with chewy cockle meat inside a thick meat patty, so I could feel tenderness and chew at the same time. It was sprinkled with plenty of snowflake cheese on top, so it was twice as nutty.

This was one of the dishes I especially enjoyed!!

Dowongyeong visiting tips: window seats and a Suncheon Bay route

If you visit Dowongyeong during the daytime in autumn, you can see the golden field view past the window, so I recommend the window seats. Suncheon Bay National Garden and Suncheon Bay Wetland are right nearby, so it's a perfect place to stop for a filling meal before or after your trip.
