Sillim bar with seat mixing and card games in Seoul: Yahwa Sillim

Yahwa Sillim is a solo drinking bar on basement level 1 in Sillim, Gwanak, Seoul, a three-minute walk from Sillim Station Exit 4. After a first round of soju and beer, the writer stopped by Yahwa Sillim for Kkotjam (9.5% ABV) and Faust (40% ABV), a Godfather and cheese cake, then got talking to strangers over table card games and alligator roulette. Even for a shy drinker, the seat mixing and games opened up conversation easily — the night ended with a second round together.

Euljiro tteokbokki restaurant for pre-show dinner: Hyeonseoni-ne

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is a long-running instant tteokbokki (rice cakes in sweet-spicy sauce) spot a two-minute walk from Exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. With time to spare before a show in Euljiro, two of us ordered instant tteokbokki for two plus curly fish cakes at medium spice and cleared the pan in 15 minutes; four yaki-mandu (fried dumplings), jjolmyeon noodles, egg and cabbage came in the pan, so no extra sides were needed. For mild, old-fashioned sweet-spicy tteokbokki rather than the fiery modern kind, Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is the answer.
