Siheung Baegot Korean BBQ: belly with mini rice noodles, Ssosam 208

In short

Ssosam 208 Siheung Baegot Branch is a charcoal Korean BBQ restaurant on the 1st floor of Dain Royal Palace 4 in Baegot's central shopping district, Siheung, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the Korean Hanpork marbled ogyeopsal (skin-on pork belly) set for 49,000 won. Staff grilled the pork with asparagus, garlic and kimchi, warmed the meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) on the grill, and brought a free mini rice noodle soup mid-meal. Thanks to the juicy marbled belly and grilled kimchi, the Ssosam 208 marbled belly set is the one the writer would order first next time.

What is the atmosphere like at Ssosam 208 Siheung Baegot?

Being in the Baegot central shopping district, it's easy to get to. The exterior is clean and the space looks roomy, so it seemed good for families as well as company dinners and get-togethers. The moment you walk in, the smell of toasty charcoal hits you. If you love meat, that smell alone will get you excited.

Inside, the tables are spaced widely so it doesn't feel cramped, and everything was kept tidy, which made it a comfortable place to eat. The staff greeted us kindly, so the first impression was good too.

Compressed wet wipes that expand with water

One thing that impressed me at Ssosam 208 was the wet wipes. They aren't ordinary ones. They come compressed, and when the staff pours water on them, the little round disc turns into a soft wet wipe in seconds. It's a small thing, but it was fun and hygienic, hahaha.

Free mini rice noodle soup served mid-meal

At Ssosam 208 Siheung Baegot Branch, a mini rice noodle soup (ssal-guksu) came out as a free extra in the middle of the meal. The broth was rich and savory, and the noodles were soft, so it worked as a clean palate cleanser after the meat. One sip of the hot broth warmed me right through! Even though it was a freebie, the quality was good, which made the meal even better.

Asparagus grilled over charcoal with the pork belly

The asparagus the staff grilled with the meat was really good too. At BBQ places you usually focus only on the meat, but here they carefully grilled asparagus as well, which I loved. Golden over the charcoal, the outside was lightly charred and fragrant while the inside stayed juicy, so the texture was great.

After the fatty pork belly, eating asparagus made my mouth feel clean again. It was crisp yet tender and paired beautifully with the meat. A bite of juicy belly with asparagus brought out even more flavor. Not just the meat but the side vegetables were grilled with care, which made the meal even more satisfying.

How does Ssosam 208's marbled pork belly taste?

Ssosam 208's marbled pork belly bursts with juice the moment you bite in, the fat is chewy, and the skin is springy. The marbled pork belly was the dish I was most looking forward to, and from the moment it arrived, its vivid color and nice marbling stood out. It looked so fresh that I couldn't wait to try it.

I also liked that the staff grill it for you, so you get it at its best. The moment the belly goes on the charcoal, a toasty aroma starts to spread, and just smelling it made me hungrier. Watching it turn golden brown built the anticipation even more.

One bite of the well-cooked belly and I immediately understood why it's called marbled pork belly. The juices burst through my mouth and the savory flavor spread everywhere. The lean meat was tender and moist, and the fat wasn't greasy but pleasantly chewy, so the texture was great. The skin, so characteristic of pork belly, was cooked just right and added a springy chew, hahaha.

Marbled pork belly with salt and meljeot dipping sauce

Above all, you can tell the meat itself is good quality. Even with just a light dip in salt and no seasoning, it was plenty tasty, and the richness got deeper with every bite. Maybe because it's charcoal-grilled, there was also a subtle smoky flavor that made it even deeper.

My personal favorite combo was dipping it in meljeot (salted fermented shrimp sauce). The meljeot, warmed on the grill, had no fishy taste, only savory depth, and paired fantastically with the belly!!! Salty meljeot meeting juicy pork belly really doubled the flavor.

Pairings: grilled garlic with wasabi, grilled kimchi and seasoned bean sprouts

Eating it with grilled garlic was great too. Garlic browned in the fat turns sweet and nutty, and with the belly it cuts the greasiness while boosting the flavor. Add a little wasabi on top and you get a clean kick as well, so there were lots of ways to enjoy it.

I can't skip the kimchi and seasoned bean sprouts (kongnamul-muchim) grilled beside the meat on the custom-made grill. Kimchi that soaked up the meat fat got even more savory, and the bean sprouts stayed crunchy and went really well with the belly!!! A piece of belly topped with grilled kimchi and sprouts filled my mouth with so much flavor that I couldn't help exclaiming.

Pork belly can turn tough or greasy if grilled badly, but Ssosam 208's marbled belly was nothing like that. Thanks to a good fat layer it was moist and savory, and I never got tired of it until the end!! The staff cut and grilled it into easy bite sizes, which made it even more comfortable to eat. Every bite stayed juicy, and the nutty flavor lingered the more I chewed. I think I wolfed it down, lol, ahh no...haha. And the grilled kimchi was just insanely good, T_T

If you usually love pork belly, please try Ssosam 208's marbled belly at least once. The juiciness, the chew, the savory flavor, nothing was lacking. Having eaten it myself, I get why so many people recommend it as a Baegot meat place.

If I had to pick the most memorable dish of this visit, it would definitely be the marbled pork belly. The juice filling my mouth, the rich nuttiness, and the perfect combination with meljeot, kimchi and bean sprouts made it so good. Next time too, this marbled belly will be the first thing I order.

Does Ssosam 208's grill warm the garlic and meljeot too?

Yes. The custom-made grill at Ssosam 208 Siheung Baegot Branch has space beside the meat area where garlic and meljeot can go. It's a bit different from a regular BBQ grill, set up so you can enjoy various ingredients besides the meat.

While the meat cooked, the staff put oil on one side of the grill and grilled garlic there, and the smell of garlic turning golden was wonderful. Eaten with the meat, it brought out the flavor and doubled the nuttiness.

They also put the meljeot on the grill to warm it up, which I loved. It's simmered gently, not too hot, and dipping charcoal-scented belly into it gave an amazing savory punch. The salty, deep flavor really lifted the taste of the meat.

Is Ssosam 208 worth it for Korean BBQ pork belly in Baegot?

If you're looking for a good pork belly restaurant in Baegot, I really recommend Ssosam 208 Siheung Baegot Branch. The marbled pork belly set was generous in portion, the meat quality was satisfying, and the charcoal aroma made it even better. I liked getting the richness of the belly and the cleaner taste of the neck cut in one set, and since the staff grill for you, the meal was relaxed.

The noodle soup served at the end made a perfect finish, which made this meal even more memorable. If you're looking for a family meal, date or company dinner spot in Baegot, do visit. Next time I plan to try the hangjeongsal (pork jowl) and gabrisal (pork rib-cap meat) too.
