Second visit to Hyeonseonine, a Yongsan tteokbokki institution
A Yongsan tteokbokki hotspot, Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch — an honest review! 😋 Today I'm writing up my visit to 'Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch,' located near Yongridan-gil, one of Yongsan's hottest spots.
This was actually already my second visit here..👍🏻👍🏻 The first time was a work lunch with coworkers back in the day, and this time I came back on my own!!!

Just go into this alley.

Finding the red building, and what Hyeonseonine looks like inside
The vibe: the exterior is a red building you can spot from far away — that's Hyeonseonine. The lettering on the sign for 'Hyeonseonine' has this warm, nostalgic feel to it too. The mascot character kind of looks like Jessie from Toy Story..so cute

Inside: the counter is right there as you walk in, with a big menu board hanging up. Being the famous spot it is, the walls are packed with old photos — you can feel the years behind it, which honestly builds trust.
Wait, the wait is seriously long lol. So surprised. It's tucked in an alley but everyone still comes hunting for it..
On one wall you can spot traces of TV appearances like 'Tasty Guys,' plus lots of celebrity signatures — certified real-deal restaurant!

How to order: Catch Table waiting and the kiosk
Catch Table waiting is also an option!!!!! You sit down first, then order easily through the kiosk. It's not just for eating in — you can also get the instant tteokbokki to go, just so you know!

What's on the menu, and how spicy is medium?
The menu is broadly split into set menus and à la carte items, put together so you can enjoy all kinds of combinations. The set menus come loaded with tteokbokki, sundae (Korean blood sausage), fried snacks, mini gimbap, fish cake and more, and there's even a draft beer set that seems perfect for a drink at dinner. But I went with instant tteokbokki haha

We went with the instant menu!!! You could pick mild, medium, or spicy, and we safely went with medium! Medium turned out to be just barely a notch spicier than Shin Ramyun!! And even I, someone weak to spice, could handle it just fine

How the instant tteokbokki and fritters tasted
The tteokbokki: true to instant-style tteokbokki, a pot comes out on a burner, loaded up with glass noodles, cabbage, rice cake, fish cake and more. The red broth gets richer the longer it boils, and it really gets your appetite going 🥵🥵
The medium spice level was just right — not too spicy, with a sweet-and-spicy balance that had me hooked and never getting tired of it. The rice cakes were chewy and well-seasoned with sauce, genuinely delicious. And dipping the fried snacks in the tteokbokki broth is just a house rule.

Frying rice in the leftover tteokbokki broth
The tteokbokki broth was so good that even though I was full, there was no way I wasn't getting the fried rice. 🥹🥹🥹🥹 We fried it ourselves right in the pot, using the leftover broth. Finished it off perfectly with fried rice that had that nutty, toasty smell wafting up.

So freaking good lol. The instructions for how to eat it are taped right to the table

Just follow it and today you're the chef~~ It has detailed instructions on everything from adjusting the heat to making the fried rice, so even a beginner can enjoy great tteokbokki without messing it up. Pro tip in particular: when making the fried rice, it sticks to the bottom fast, so keep stirring!

Self-serve bar and tips for your visit
TIP! Self-serve bar: there's a self-serve bar set up on one side of the restaurant where you can freely grab pickled radish, bowls, scissors and more. The owner was also super kind, so I left in a great mood..
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch made it clear why it's been beloved as a Yongsan favorite for so long. Generous portions, an addictive sweet-and-spicy tteokbokki flavor, plus the fun of cooking it yourself! Whether you come with friends, a partner, or family, it seems like it'd be a satisfying meal either way.♥️
If you're near Yongsan craving good tteokbokki, don't overthink it, just head to Hyeonseonine! Highly recommend! 👍
