Yeongdeungpo Japanese pub for sashimi and uni pasta: Kaken

In short

Kaken is a Japanese pub near Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, with bar seating and an open kitchen. I ordered assorted sashimi, uni cream pasta, and draft beer; the sashimi’s springy texture and monkfish liver stood out, while the warm, rich pasta was worth the short wait.

Where is Kaken?

I went to Kaken, a Japanese pub near Dangsan Station, for a drink with some food. It is at 237 Dangsan-ro, 1F #101, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul.

The warm wood-toned atmosphere outside caught my eye first. When I arrived, the dining room was full.

The entrance displayed the day’s menu, so I checked it before going in.

What are the seating and atmosphere like for conversation?

Inside, there was bar-table seating and an open kitchen, so I could watch the cooking up close. The smell of grilling skewers made me consider ordering some, but I did not have them that day.

It was fun to watch the kitchen prepare dishes and add a smoky finish with a torch. Although there were many customers, it was calm enough for conversation while I was there, and the cozy atmosphere made me feel comfortable.

What stood out about the assorted sashimi?

That day, I ordered assorted sashimi, uni cream pasta, and draft beer. I enjoyed the complimentary appetizer and beer first, then the assorted sashimi arrived.

The aged raw fish came in several cuts, which made it enjoyable to try each one. Every piece had a springy texture and savory depth, and the monkfish liver especially stayed with me.

Was the uni cream pasta worth the wait?

The uni cream pasta took a little time to arrive, but I was able to eat it warm. It was richer than I expected, and the thick sauce was not greasy to me; it had a nutty richness. I ate the noodles with the uni and kept spooning up the sauce too.

The service was kind, and it was a comfortable time to enjoy food with drinks while talking. Next time, I would like to return with a friend and try the skewers or fried dishes I missed this time.
