Mapo Station Korean BBQ, 12:30 wait for marinated beef: Moyeon Mapo
In short
Moyeon Mapo (모연 마포본점) is a hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant in Yonggang-dong near Mapo Station Exit 1 in Seoul, named to the Blue Ribbon Survey 7 years in a row. Arriving around 12:30 on a weekday, the writer waited about 30 minutes behind 3 groups, then had 2 servings of charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo with pot rice (₩25,000 each) and a Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles, ₩16,000) in a private room. Verdict: Moyeon Mapo's smoky marinated beef and rich, beefy naengmyeon beat expectations and were worth the wait.

As the weather gets chillier, I crave a hearty meal more and more. So here's my story about Moyeon Mapo, a Gongdeok meat restaurant I went to for a lunch special: a neat full table with pot rice, plus charcoal-grilled hanwoo.

What is Moyeon Mapo like inside and out?
Moyeon Mapo is a Mapo favorite that has earned a Blue Ribbon 7 years in a row. The interior stands out with beige brick, a wood accent in the middle and blue wrapped around it. It looks like a classy Gongdeok Korean set-meal restaurant.

The origin labeling is nicely done too.

- Sea urchin roe: USA
How long is the weekday lunch wait at Moyeon Mapo?
I got to Moyeon Mapo around 12:30 on a weekday, and there were 3 groups ahead of me, so I waited about 30 minutes. A wait even on a weekday, ugh. I misjudged the timing; coming at 1:00 would have been better.
There were lots of older customers, and families came too. There were some foreigners as well, haha.

Private room seating at Moyeon Mapo
Finally we got into the room! The room at Moyeon Mapo has coat hangers, and the table is a roomy 4-person one. It was nice to enjoy the meal privately in such a spacious space.
I heard that "moyeon" refers to the smoke of hanwoo grilling deliciously. True to its name as a Mapo hanwoo dining spot, it's a Korean beef dining restaurant that aims to deliver a refined food culture experience.

Moyeon Mapo lunch menu and prices
The lunch menu at Moyeon Mapo is available 11:30–14:00. For meals there's Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles), and for grilled dishes there's charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo & pot rice and lunch sirloin & pot rice, all at reasonable prices.
The charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo & pot rice, which lets you enjoy both at once, is ₩25,000 and is a very popular item.

- Charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo & pot rice ₩25,000 × 2
- Pyongyang naengmyeon ₩16,000
We ordered the charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo & pot rice and the Pyongyang naengmyeon.

The charcoal for grilling the marinated hanwoo came in, and the full table was set.

How do you eat the pot rice at Moyeon Mapo?
The pot rice at Moyeon Mapo comes with mushrooms, sweet potato, pine nuts and more. They say it's made with Golden Queen No. 3 rice, one of Korea's top-grade rice varieties, cooked in a cast-iron pot as soon as you order.

Add the soy-marinated abalone broth and the abalone, drop in the butter, and mix it all up.

The rice is glossy, nutty and delicious.

How does Moyeon's charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo taste?
At Moyeon Mapo, a staff member grills the charcoal marinated hanwoo for you.

They say they select only 1++ grade steers under 28 months old and age the beef for 500 hours (wet aging) to bring out the best flavor and tenderness.

Try it topped with sea blite (sebal-namul, a seaside herb). The charcoal-scented marinated beef melts in your mouth.

Is Moyeon's Pyongyang naengmyeon worth ordering?
I heard Moyeon Mapo's Pyongyang naengmyeon is famous too, so I ordered the ₩16,000 bowl. They say the 100% pure buckwheat noodles, made from top-grade buckwheat milled with a low-temperature stone mill for rich buckwheat aroma, are made in-house, and the broth is boiled fresh in the restaurant every day.
They say the broth uses only ultra-fresh hanwoo slaughtered within 3 days, and it had a deep beefy flavor.
Moyeon Mapo lunch: final verdict
Moyeon Mapo, a Mapo meat restaurant with 7 straight years of Blue Ribbon recognition, was a meal that beat my expectations. I had the lunch special, a neat full table with pot rice and charcoal-grilled hanwoo, along with the Pyongyang naengmyeon. I recommend this Gongdeok meat spot for its smoky charcoal marinated hanwoo and a naengmyeon where buckwheat aroma and deep beef flavor were in harmony.
