Upper and Under (어퍼앤언더) is a bakery café near Gangnam Station where you can enjoy desserts and coffee together. I was meeting a close older friend in Gangnam after work and looking for a pretty café that stays open late, and that's how I ended up at Upper and Under, which has loads of desserts and really good coffee too. Whenever work gets hard, I get through the day thinking, "Ahh, if I could just go to a café for something sweet and a good cup of coffee, I'd have no wishes left." That's me. It's a great date café too, so let me introduce it!

Getting to Upper and Under: how far from Gangnam Station Exit 11?

Upper and Under is about a 10-minute walk from Gangnam Station Exit 11. It's on the side with Gangnam's food alley and lots of cafés, so it was easy to find!

The exterior alone has great atmosphere: a brick facade with the Upper and Under sign moodily mounted on it! You go up the stairs to get to the café.

Is Upper and Under crowded on a weekday evening?

The 2nd floor, where the counter is, has plenty of seats too, but even on a weekday evening there were so many people?! The 2nd floor was almost full, so we went up to the floor above.

The upper space had tables and chairs nicely set up, and the wood-toned interior felt comfortable.

Isn't every corner so atmospheric? Even the lighting is lovely. It's a big café in Gangnam, and a good-vibes one too.

Baked goods and cakes at Upper and Under: what we picked

Upper and Under is a bakery hotspot too. There were all kinds of madeleines and financiers (small almond butter cakes), baked treats I absolutely love.

Don't they all look delicious? They must be, because almost everything was sold out! I grabbed one plain financier, my favorite, haha

I loved that Upper and Under has lots of cakes too, not just baked treats.

We chose a precious raspberry cake, the kind you can't find just anywhere!

Drinks: iced einspänner and chamomile tea

Upper and Under has a reputation as an einspänner (coffee topped with cream) hotspot, so I ordered the einspänner iced, plus a cup of chamomile tea!

How does the Upper and Under raspberry cake taste?

After we took the buzzer and waited a little, the desserts, coffee and tea all came out. Can you see how that raspberry cake looks?!

The Upper and Under raspberry cake has a fluffy sponge with raspberry whipped cream, topped with raspberry jam and fresh raspberries. I'm so happy with it!

Upper and Under einspänner: is the cream too sweet?

The cream on the Upper and Under einspänner isn't too sweet and goes perfectly with the coffee, so it was delicious! You know how a sweet coffee really gives you energy, right? You get a caffeine charge and a sugar charge, so I often go looking for einspänner.

And the chamomile tea? Need I say more? It's a café where you can chat over a cup of tea and a cup of coffee and have a happy time.

An evening catch-up, and the raspberry cake vanished

I got a present too! My close older friend went to Yeonnam-dong, thought of me and bought me a Hello Kitty keyring ♥

She doesn't usually eat dessert after a meal, but the cake at Upper and Under was so good that she said so, and we wiped out the cake completely before we even properly started chatting, haha! Next time we're definitely coming for cake again!
