Yangjae Korean restaurant for a weekend dakdoritang meetup: Yanggyegok

In short

Yanggyegok (양계옥) is a Korean restaurant specialising in charcoal dakgalbi, dakhanmari and dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew), 128m from Exit 4 of Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul. On a weekend visit with friends, the group ordered a medium dakdoritang for 3 at ₩45,000, then added ramen noodles for ₩2,000 and fried rice for ₩3,000, eating everything from the spicy broth to the fried rice finish. Yanggyegok serves enough broth to handle noodles with room to spare, and the building's underground garage is free for 2 hours, making it an easy choice for a group meal by car.

I visited Yangjae with friends on the weekend :) We went to Yanggyegok, which has all kinds of chicken dishes like charcoal dakgalbi (grilled marinated chicken), dakhanmari (whole chicken pot) and dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew), and had a fiery dakdoritang! We dropped ramen noodles into it and finished with fried rice, so here comes my honest review of Yanggyegok in Yangjae~! :)

Yanggyegok near Yangjae Station: location, parking and atmosphere

The street from Yangjae Station Exit 4 toward Yanggyegok

Yanggyegok is pretty close to Exit 4 of Yangjae Station. Come out of the exit, keep going straight, and turn around the corner with Olive Young on your left and you'll see it right away :)

Exterior of Yanggyegok Yangjae branch with a big sign

Ta-da~ It has a big sign, so it's easy to find! The building also gives you 2 hours of free parking, so drivers, take note!

Yanggyegok's wide hall lined with single tables

This is the inside of Yanggyegok. It was quite spacious, with lots of friendly single-table griddles. It feels good for a date, but also for a small get-together or a dinner out with colleagues~

Corner of the self-serve bar with disposable aprons

There's a self-serve bar on one side with kimchi, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), pickles, lettuce wraps and more.

There are even clean disposable aprons~ Good good 👍

Yanggyegok menu and what we ordered

Yanggyegok menu listing charcoal dakgalbi and dakdoritang

Here's the Yanggyegok menu haha. It's full of chicken dishes: charcoal dakgalbi in salt, soy and gochujang (chili paste) versions, plus separate dakhanmari and dakdoritang. For lighter meals there's chicken kalguksu (noodle soup) and 'gye'yuk bokkeum (stir-fried chicken, a pun on the word for chicken). Oh, I was so curious about that one haha. Sides include cold makguksu (buckwheat noodles), fried rice, rice balls and more.

It seems to have every tasty chicken dish there is. We ordered the spicy dakdoritang, medium size for 3 people, plus the ramen noodles we'd feel left out without. Ready to eat!

Toasty water that tastes like corn silk tea. I love a place that serves tasty water instead of plain water 🧡

Kimchi and kkakdugi served as side dishes

The kimchi and kkakdugi set out as side dishes. The kimchi was well fermented, so it was so good with the ramen noodles. It was labeled as spicy, and I'm not great with spice, but it wasn't that spicy.

Fully cooked medium dakdoritang for 3 people

Medium dakdoritang for 3 (₩45,000) at Yanggyegok. The dakdoritang comes fully cooked. They told us we could start eating once it began to boil.

A block of extra-ordered ramen noodles

Ramen noodles (₩2,000). The only add-in that comes with the dakdoritang is rice cake, so we added ramen noodles haha. Wherever I go, if there's even a little broth, ramen noodles become a must... We decided to drop them in after eating some of the chicken.

The dakdoritang started bubbling before long at Yanggyegok.

Once it boils, push the potatoes and green onions deep into the broth so they cook through.

Personally, I like dakdoritang with plenty of broth. I really liked that Yanggyegok has enough broth to easily handle noodles. It isn't very spicy, but pleasantly punchy and satisfyingly kalkalhan (sharp, spicy and refreshing). Some dakdoritang is sweet and spicy, but Yanggyegok's is less sweet and more of a punchy, kick-in-the-throat kind. Wow, the broth is amazing 👍

The drumsticks at Yanggyegok are trimmed so they're easy to eat. Slurp, and the meat just slides off the bone haha.

A trimmed drumstick lifted out of the pot

They moved a drumstick, a piece of rice cake and well-cooked green onion onto my small plate so neatly 😋

The rice cake is cooked soft, almost a little puffy, and soaked with the spicy dakdoritang broth 🤤 The more the better, I love it.

Drumstick, rice cake and green onion on a small plate

The drumsticks at Yanggyegok are quite big, and the meat is so tender, chewy and soft. It was trimmed for us, and the meat was so soft that it came off the bone easily 🤤👍

This is the wing. It isn't a tiny wing on its own; the drumette is attached too, so the piece is big. I love it so much~

The breast meat wasn't dry either, and eaten with the soft, juicy, well-cooked green onion, the flavor goes up even more!

Maybe because it's the 3-person portion, there's definitely a lot of food.

Pulling the meat off the bone and eating it with green onion is the best 😋

Adding ₩2,000 ramen noodles: plenty of broth without a refill

After eating some of the chicken in Yanggyegok's dakdoritang, in go the ramen noodles~

Ramen noodles comfortably covered by broth

See how the noodles are comfortably covered even without adding more broth? We kept it on low heat while eating and there was still plenty of broth, which was great 👍

If you like your ramen firm, now is the time.

Firm ramen where the square block shape hasn't fully come apart haha. It clutches the spicy dakdoritang broth tightly.

Firm-cooked ramen noodles
Dakdoritang ramen noodles topped with kimchi

Salty + salty = delicious hahaha. Since this is ramen too, it was even better topped with a piece of well-fermented napa cabbage kimchi hahaha.

Huh? There's one more drumstick..? Since it's the 3-person portion, there were 3 drumsticks, one for each of us~~ I'm always touched by details and thoughtfulness like this ✨

Three drumsticks in the pot for a 3-person portion
Dakdoritang pot kept simmering on low heat

Tip: if you turn the heat off midway, the potatoes may stay undercooked, so keep it gently simmering! Since quite some time had passed, we split the potatoes open and ate them too.

Finishing with ₩3,000 fried rice

Fried rice (₩3,000). Of course the finale is fried rice. After a good round of eating, we ordered just one fried rice :)

We scooped the leftover dakdoritang into a bowl, left a moderate amount of broth, and mixed in the fried rice, shake shake.

Yanggyegok fried rice, done~😋

Once it's crisped up nicely, turn off the heat and dig in. It was so hot haha, so we blew on it hard as we ate. We'd had our carbs from the ramen, but we agreed you only feel like you've really eaten once you've had rice, and wrapped up on a warm note~

Yanggyegok even cares about cleanliness at the end: breath candy and fabric deodorizer spray, full marks for thoughtfulness~~ Thanks for the meal :)

Is Yanggyegok in Yangjae good for group meals and dinners out?

It's so hot these days, so we fought heat with heat and came away fortified by dakdoritang. From charcoal dakgalbi to dakhanmari and dakdoritang, Yanggyegok in Yangjae has a wide range of chicken dishes, and I recommend it :)
