This weekend I took a trip to Goseong with a couple of friends. On the way we stopped at Sokcho Jungang Market, and since we'd come all the way to Sokcho, everyone agreed we had to have mulhoe (cold raw fish soup). So we headed to Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip (속초황금물회횟집), famous for its takeout.

How far is Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip from Jungang Market?
It's about a 5-minute walk from Sokcho Jungang Market, so access is really good. It's a perfect stop after browsing the market.

The exterior looked clean and tidy, and the seafood in the tanks looked fresh, so I was excited from the first impression.
Inside Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip: cleanliness

We visited in the morning, so it wasn't crowded and we could look around at our leisure. The inside was kept very clean, and I was happy with how the tables were tidied.
Honestly, I've often found that famous mulhoe places have great flavor but disappointing hygiene. Not here, not at all. If our lodging had been nearby, the place felt so pleasant that I'd have wanted to eat in rather than take out.

How does Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip pack mulhoe for takeout?
The mulhoe comes neatly packed in a cooler bag, with the broth in a separate beer-can-shaped container. As you'd expect from a takeout specialist, the packing system was impressive, and I didn't have to worry about spills while traveling. If you're looking for Sokcho raw fish takeout, this is a big plus.
Eating the takeout Hwanggeum Mulhoe with a BBQ dinner

I picked up the Hwanggeum Mulhoe in the morning and ate it that evening at our Goseong lodging with a barbecue. It turned out to be a very satisfying choice.

The broth: tangy with a gentle kick
The Hwanggeum Mulhoe broth is tangy with a mild spiciness. It isn't harsh but clean, the kind you keep slurping. It went especially well as a drinking snack.

Hwanggeum Mulhoe with sea squirt and buckwheat noodles
There's also meongge (sea squirt) in the bowl, which really brings out the taste of the sea and makes the whole thing feel very refreshing. I could see why this gets called a top Sokcho mulhoe spot.
What impressed me most was that the noodles aren't regular thin wheat noodles but buckwheat noodles. Their nutty flavor made the combination feel much more mellow, and my stomach felt comfortable afterward. It's easy to eat alongside other food, so it paired well with the barbecue too.
