Bueokgan Sangmu Branch (부엌간 상무점) is a European-style Italian brunch restaurant in Sangmu, on Seogwangju-ro in Seo-gu, Gwangju. Stopping by for a date on the way back from a dental appointment, the writer ordered Couple Set B (51,000 won) with a garden salad, truffle mushroom pizza and abalone cream risotto, and was happy with both the upscale, Roman-hotel-themed interior and the food. Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is an easy recommendation for an anniversary date or special occasion, with no drawbacks to speak of.

Seoul Korean restaurant: celebrity wall, ₩13,000 bulgogi, Bapjangin

Bapjangin Express Bus Terminal Branch is a Korean restaurant in the underground shopping area at Express Bus Terminal Station in Seocho, Seoul, serving everyday meals like kimchi stew, bulgogi stir-fry, sundubu (soft tofu) stew and a solo Spam set. After a day trip to Seoul, the writer ate kimchi stew (Shin Ramyun spice level 2), bulgogi stir-fry and steamed egg before catching a bus, and Bapjangin's 13,000-won solo plate of bulgogi with rice and side dishes was unusually generous for today's prices. For a clean, good-value Korean meal at Express Bus Terminal, Bapjangin is a solid recommendation.

Muhwawon Bukchon Perfume Workshop (무화원 북촌향수공방) is a perfume-making workshop on the 3rd floor of a building tucked off Seosunra-gil in Jongno, Seoul. The writer booked on Naver during a Seoul trip to lift the mood of a younger sibling worn out by daily life. The visit included a tablet lesson, scent testing and up to 3 blending rounds, and one ingredient was dropped on the perfumer's advice to reach the scent they wanted. Quiet, private and soothing, Muhwawon is an easy recommendation for a Bukchon or Jongno date.

Sinsa tteokbokki shop with tossed fried dumplings: Mil Tteok Factory

Mil Tteok Factory Main Branch (밀떡팩토리 본점) is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant specializing in wheat rice cakes, on basement level 1 in Garosu-gil near Sinsa Station in Gangnam, Seoul. A mother and daughter shared the Brown brisket tteokbokki (M), seasoned fried dumplings, sweet potato cheese gratin and apple mango ade, and even the writer, a devoted rice-flour tteok fan, was won over by the soft, chewy wheat tteok. Mil Tteok Factory Main Branch is a Garosu-gil tteokbokki spot worth recommending to anyone who cares about rice cake texture.

Bukchon pizza lunch with my daughter: corn pizza & lasagna, Low Five

Low Five Anguk is a casual pizza and pasta restaurant with handmade dough on Bukchon-ro in Jongno, Seoul, a short walk from Exit 1 of Anguk Station. The writer and her daughter came for an early weekday lunch around 11:30, ordered the corn pizza, classic lasagna and freshly squeezed orange juice, and fell especially for the chewy, mild dough. Low Five Anguk is an easy pick when you want pizza that tastes wholesome rather than heavy.

Deogyang-gu Office gukbap restaurant: Pyeongando Set Small for three

Pyeongando Restaurant Hwajeong Branch (평안도식당 화정점) is a gukbap (Korean rice soup) restaurant in Hwajeong-dong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang, directly across from the Deogyang-gu Office main gate, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Three of us ordered the Pyeongando Set (Small) and bone haejangguk (pork bone hangover soup), and a receipt review earned us a plate of galbi mandu (short rib dumplings). The Pyeongando Set (Small), which lets you try suyuk, pyeonyuk, sundae and sulguk at once, was more than enough for three.

Pungsan Station Japanese restaurant, date with my daughter: Kitsuki

Kitsuki Ilsan Bamridan-gil Branch is a casual Japanese restaurant specialising in katsu and udon, near Exit 1 of Pungsan Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi. On a hot day when nothing appealed, the writer took her daughter there on a date and ordered assorted katsu (₩18,000), perilla cream udon (₩13,000) and ebi fry (₩7,000). The Jirisan Berkshire K black pork katsu was juicy with no gamey smell, but if you pick only one dish at Kitsuki, the writer strongly recommends the perilla cream udon, which revives a flagging appetite without feeling heavy.

Ilsan Anigol Korean restaurant, flounder soup set meal: Haenon Miyeok

Haenon Miyeok Ilsan Direct Branch is a seaweed soup set meal restaurant on Anigol-gil in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. The writer and her high school daughter ordered the flounder seaweed soup set, which came with self-bar sides (japchae, seasoned scallops, sweet and sour mushrooms), black sesame salad, seasoned grilled flounder and hijiki rice. The broth at Haenon Miyeok was rich without being salty, making it a tidy Korean meal for a family outing or for treating guests.
