Refillable curry and rice at Yangju Okjeong tonkatsu spot Himawari
In short
Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch is a Japanese-style tonkatsu restaurant on Okjeongdong-ro 7da-gil in Yangju, Gyeonggi. On a friend's recommendation I ordered the katsu curry set, the limited-quantity sweet potato cheese katsu set and a crab croquette, ground the sesame seeds myself for the tonkatsu sauce, and kept going with pressure-cooker rice and free curry and rice refills. Himawari is a Yangju Okjeong tonkatsu place that wins on solid basics rather than one flashy trick.

A friend told me she'd found real tonkatsu and that I had to come out to Yangju. At first I figured it was just a tidy Japanese-style tonkatsu place, but even before I walked in, something felt different. Turns out Himawari is a brand built on nearly 20 years of a craftsman's know-how in Japanese-style tonkatsu cooking. Once I read that, I got even more curious about the food.

The exterior has the logo written in Japanese, 'ひまわり', and the heavy wood-toned door gives it a warm feel.

What the dining room and seating are like
Inside, Himawari is neatly arranged with three 2-person tables and three 4-person tables. Rather than a heavy Japanese-style theme, it felt calm and pulled together around wood and ivory tones. White tables, soft lighting, and wood-toned walls came together for a much cozier atmosphere than I expected. It felt like a space that works whether you're eating solo or with the whole family. The wide table layout in particular looked comfortable even for a bigger group.

What I ordered: katsu curry set and sweet potato cheese katsu set
Here's what I ordered:

The katsu curry set. One bite in, and the rich curry aroma spread right over that crunch.

The sweet potato cheese katsu set (limited quantity). Crispy and sweet all through your mouth! A 100% handmade sweet potato cheese katsu.

Grinding your own sesame for the tonkatsu sauce
Himawari doesn't do a basic banchan spread. Everything comes set on one tray, so while I waited for the food I ground the sesame seeds sitting in the sauce bowl haha. Grinding it myself, that crunchy, nutty scent started rising up. Grind the sesame, pour in the tonkatsu sauce next to it, and the sauce is done haha.

The food came out, and I drizzled sesame dressing over the cabbage salad and tried the crab croquette I'd ordered first.
🥢 The basics you can taste in a single dish

Himawari's tonkatsu doesn't pile on flashy sauces — the style is about focusing on the flavor of the meat and the frying itself. They coat it in flour, egg wash, and breadcrumbs, and emphasize an honest cooking principle of not using synthetic additives like beta mix. Even in photos, the breading looks pretty crisp, right? What really caught my eye was the tonkatsu with sweet potato and cheese inside! The moment you cut it, you see the cross-section with a thick layer of cheese, and the combination of soft, melted cheese between crunchy breading looked mouthwatering just to look at. And I liked that there were lighter options too, like rosu katsu, hire katsu, and fish katsu, depending on your taste.
🍚 Why the rice matters so much at a tonkatsu restaurant

Himawari apparently puts as much care into the rice as into the tonkatsu itself. They cook rice fresh every morning in a pressure cooker, thinking hard about the texture and balance that go best with tonkatsu. You can actually see the shine on the rice grains in the photos, and eating it alongside the tonkatsu felt light, not heavy at all! Add the cabbage salad, miso soup, and pickles, and the whole spread felt pretty substantial. There's also an option to enjoy tonkatsu and curry together, so if you like pairing crispy tonkatsu with rich curry, this combo will hit the spot! *Both curry and rice are refillable.
What I liked most about Himawari

There are so many tonkatsu places around these days, right? But Himawari didn't feel like it was trying to win with one flashy trick — it felt like a place whose charm comes from sticking to the basics for a long time. Crispy breading, clean-tasting meat, cheese that melts in a nutty way, and warm rice. All four just naturally come together on one plate. Above all, the brand's stated values — good ingredients, high-heat cooking, honest cooking principles, and treating guests like family — really did come through in the food!
Not 'wow, that's so intense!' but 'this place really nails the basics' — that's what stays with you here.
It felt like those 20 years weren't just a number, but something actually layered into a single plate of tonkatsu. If you're looking for a family meal spot in Yangju Okjeong, or just craving clean, simple Japanese-style tonkatsu, this is worth a visit. If you especially love the combo of crispy tonkatsu and cheese, don't skip the sweet potato cheese katsu. Just like flavors don't need fancy dressing up to stick in your memory, Himawari really lived up to the phrase 'an honest meal' — a Yangju tonkatsu spot worth remembering.
