In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥) is a Korean restaurant specializing in mackerel dishes on Iljuseo-ro in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju. After about a 20-minute lunch wait, the writer had the aged kimchi braised mackerel with abalone pot rice for 2 (₩36,000) and grilled mackerel (₩15,000), along with 16 side dishes from the self-serve bar and nurungji (scorched rice) from the stone pot. The boneless flower mackerel braise, limited to 30 a day, wasn't available, but Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap still delivered a hearty, distinctly Jeju meal.

Eating Jeju's mackerel dishes in Jungmun

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥) is a Korean restaurant specializing in mackerel dishes in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju. I wanted a hearty meal during my Jeju trip. Black pork and seafood are great on Jeju, but I really wanted to try a local dish made with mackerel too. It's famous with locals and tourists alike, so I went in with high hopes.

Entrance of Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap with a lunchtime wait

I came around lunchtime, and of course there was a wait, about 20 minutes.

Flower garden in front of Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

A garden that blooms all four seasons

It's a restaurant with flowers, so you get a relaxing, happy view all year round. The 3,500-pyeong garden in front changes with the seasons, they say. You can see everything from rapeseed blossoms to roses to a snow-covered landscape.

Wide, clean seating inside Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

Inside, the first thing I noticed was how wide and clean it was. There were plenty of seats even for groups, and I saw lots of families. As lunchtime got closer and customers kept pouring in, you could tell it's a popular spot.

I wanted to try the boneless mackerel stew, but it's limited to 30 a day, so I couldn't have it this time :(

Basic side dishes served first at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

Side dishes and the 16-item self-serve bar

After we ordered and waited a bit, a variety of side dishes came out first. Each one was neatly presented, so my expectations went up before the meal even started. There were kimchi, seasoned vegetables, and wrap greens, side dishes that go well with mackerel.

What I especially liked was the separate self-serve bar. The basic table setting already comes with plenty of side dishes, and on top of that you can help yourself to a whopping 16 more at the bar. From fresh wrap greens to kimchi, seasoned vegetables, and jangajji (pickled vegetables), there was such a variety that you could take whatever suited your taste.

It was extra convenient to fetch more of whatever I was running low on without feeling awkward about it. With so many wrap greens and side dishes, every bite could be a different combination, and it felt as generous as a full-course Korean table (hanjeongsik).

How was the aged kimchi mackerel stew?

The signature aged kimchi mackerel stew (묵은지고등어조림) arrived with big pieces of mackerel and well-fermented kimchi piled up appetizingly. It looked like something that would empty a bowl of rice in no time. The broth had a deep, richly seasoned color, and a faint spicy aroma rose up and got my appetite going.

I tried a piece of mackerel first, and the flesh was really tender. Even though it had been simmered for a long time, it was moist, not dry, and the seasoning had soaked all the way in, so the saltiness was just right. I barely noticed any fishy taste, just the mackerel's own nutty richness.

The aged kimchi was another highlight. Its moderately ripe sourness and savory depth blended well with the stew seasoning. Eating mackerel and kimchi together was a really good match, and on top of warm rice, the phrase "rice thief" (a dish so good you keep eating rice) came to mind on its own.

Abalone stone pot rice

The abalone stone pot rice that came with the set was satisfying too. The moment I lifted the lid, a nutty rice aroma rose up, and the generous amount of abalone on top looked lavish. The abalone was chewy yet tender.

Extra grilled mackerel and a nurungji finish

I can't skip the grilled mackerel I added for ₩15,000! The golden-grilled mackerel was crispy outside and moist inside. With the first bite, the mackerel's rich flavor filled my mouth, and the salty seasoning made it perfect with rice. I could faintly taste the grill's smoky char, a different charm from the stew.

After the meal, we poured hot water into the stone pot and enjoyed nurungji (scorched rice soup). The toasty crust loosened softly and made the ending of the meal even more filling. It felt like a proper Korean meal during my Jeju trip, and I was satisfied.
