Dongseong-ro Korean set meals: Gimpo gold rice, dumplings, Cafe Dongi

In short

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a Korean set-meal (bapsang) restaurant on the 2nd floor on Dongseong-ro 3-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu. The writer ordered the Dongi fire-grilled jeyuk (spicy pork) set, the grandma's jjukkumi (baby octopus) stir-fry set and the 50-year-tradition juicy fried dumplings, used the kimchi jjigae swap option, and helped themselves at the self-bar with fried eggs, multigrain rice and sungnyung (scorched-rice tea). With most dishes priced at around 10,000 won, Cafe Dongi is a good spot for a filling Korean meal in Dongseong-ro.

When you're out playing around Dongseong-ro, you sometimes catch yourself thinking, "Today I really want a proper meal," right? Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch (카페동이 동성로본점) is the place that came to mind.

Cafe Dongi's charm isn't flashy dishes but a hearty Korean table. Charcoal-grilled jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork), grilled bulgogi, kimchi jjigae (stew) and even a well-stocked self-bar. My satisfaction was quite high, so here's my firsthand review.

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch: hours and how to get there

Hours are 11:00-20:30, with a break from 15:00-16:30. It's walkable from both Banwoldang Station and Jungangno Station, so access is really good.

It's close to the main Dongseong-ro shopping district, so it's easy to drop by after shopping or a date, and it works for an office lunch or a family meal. Public transport is convenient, so first-timers shouldn't have any trouble finding it.

What kind of restaurant is Cafe Dongi? Gimpo gold rice and the brand story

Cafe Dongi is a Korean restaurant run on the philosophy of "sharing happiness with neighbors through a more valuable meal." I read the brand story before going in, and it was quite impressive.

They say they use top-grade Gimpo rice grown in the clean DMZ area, and you can feel the effort to offer a generous table at an easy price.

One line stuck with me: "A restaurant where one person comes 100 times, rather than 100 people coming once." After visiting, I could kind of see why it has so many regulars.

Easy to find in Dongseong-ro: 2nd floor, with an elevator

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is in an easy-to-find spot in Dongseong-ro.

The building looks clean, and a menu board stands in front of the entrance, so you can check the dishes before going in.

It's on the 2nd floor, but there's an elevator and good signage, so going up was no hassle.

What is the atmosphere like inside Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro?

The interior is wood-toned throughout, and the mood was really relaxing.

The space is fairly large and the seats are well spaced, so it never felt stuffy while eating.

Spacious seating at Cafe Dongi

It's good with friends, good with family, and not awkward for eating solo either. I also liked how clean everything felt.

Cafe Dongi menu and prices

Set meal menu at Cafe Dongi

Besides the signature charcoal-grilled jeyuk set and grilled bulgogi set, the menu is really varied: the 40-year master's kimchi jjigae set, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), perilla siraegi (dried radish greens) bibimbap, young summer radish (yeolmu) bibimbap and more.

The sides caught my eye too: 50-year-tradition juicy fried dumplings and nurungji-aged (scorched rice) tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). Most prices are around ₩10,000, so it seemed like a good place for a hearty meal in Dongseong-ro without stress.

What's at the Cafe Dongi self-bar?

At the self-bar you can make your own fried egg, and help yourself to multigrain rice, seaweed flakes and barley crisps. Personally, the self-bar was my favorite part.

You can even have warm sungnyung (nurungji tea) at the end of the meal, which was a lovely finish. The self-bar was kept clean overall, so it was a pleasure to use.

Jeyuk and jjukkumi set meals with fried dumplings: a full table

This time at Cafe Dongi I ordered the Dongi charcoal-grilled jeyuk set, the grandma's jjukkumi stir-fry set and the 50-year-tradition juicy fried dumplings.

Seeing the whole table laid out, I immediately understood why so many people recommend it as a Dongseong-ro restaurant.

🔥 Dongi fire-grilled jeyuk (spicy pork) set

What first grabbed me in the Dongi charcoal-grilled jeyuk set was the grilled pork with its properly smoky char flavor.

The pork is cut into bite-size pieces, well soaked in sweet and spicy sauce, and the charcoal flavor on top made me crave rice.

Eaten with the side dishes that come with it, the meal felt even more filling.

🔥 Grandma's jjukkumi (baby octopus) stir-fry set meal

The grandma's jjukkumi stir-fry set had a different charm from the grilled jeyuk.

Tender baby octopus in a sweeter, spicier sauce with a savory depth. It's the kind of taste anyone would like, and an easy "rice thief" (a dish so good you eat endless rice) to enjoy.

🍲 Swapping the side for kimchi jjigae

I swapped the set's extra item for kimchi jjigae, and the red, bubbling stew made my mouth water just looking at it. The deeply brewed broth and big chunks of ingredients came together, and every spoonful had rich savory flavor,

a hearty dish that goes perfectly with rice.

🥟 50-year-tradition juicy fried dumplings

The 50-year-tradition juicy fried dumplings I ordered as a side were better than I expected. Inside the golden, crispy shell was plenty of moist juice, and the nutty flavor filled my mouth with the first bite.

They're good on their own, and dipping them in the sauce that comes with them gives a different charm.

A generous spread that tasted great too. If you want a filling lunch or dinner, these dishes should satisfy you.

Is Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch worth a return visit?

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch scored really high for me: a generous table, clean food, a comfortable atmosphere and a self-bar. After visiting, I could see why Cafe Dongi is steadily loved.

If you're looking for a lunch spot in Dongseong-ro or a Korean restaurant near Banwoldang, it's worth a stop. Next time I plan to go back for the nurungji-aged tangsuyuk and other set meals.
