2nd-floor seats and kimchi dumplings at Tanbaek, Jung-gu, Seoul

Tanbaek is a beef kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Jeongdong-gil in Jung-gu, Seoul. Visiting after 1pm on a summer weekday meant no wait and spacious second-floor seating, where the writer tried gom-kalguksu, yukgaejang-kalguksu, and kimchi mandu (dumplings), preferring the yukgaejang version. Tanbaek is a solid pick for a tidy Korean meal after a walk through Deoksugung Palace and Jeongdong-gil.
