With the weather getting way too hot lately, I decided there was no way I could pull off an actual picnic, so I packed a lunchbox for a home picnic instead. When you can't decide on just one thing, a set menu is exactly the answer.
Halls Gimbap near Gyodae Station, the former Auto Gimbap
The place I packed my order from is Halls Gimbap, near Gyodae Station. I kept seeing this combo on delivery apps and wondered what it was — turns out it's the former Auto Gimbap!
Now that it's rebranded as Halls Gimbap, I got to try an even wider menu lineup.
Inside Halls Gimbap: solo seats to tables for four
The restaurant is on the larger side, so it seemed like you could eat comfortably even during the lunch rush. There were single seats where you could eat solo without feeling self-conscious, all the way up to 4-person tables for sharing with a group.
Kiosk ordering and what is on the Halls Gimbap menu
Ordering is all done through a kiosk, payment included — you just select dine-in or takeout and choose your items. The most famous option is understandably the one that comes with dakgangjeong.
They also sell single items, so I usually go with one single item plus a combo. Today too, I picked the double cheese egg + spam dakgangjeong combo. The prices were pretty reasonable too.
If you just want the basic gimbap, go with the Halls Gimbap option, and there's also a half-and-half option, so trying a mix of flavors could make for a nice meal too.
What kinds of gimbap does Halls Gimbap make?
There's spam, wasabi, Halls, Jindo green onion tuna, konjac minari (water dropwort), and double cheese — pick whatever suits your taste. I've tried them all, but spam and double cheese are my style!
Dakgangjeong sold by the gram, and by the box
The dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken) comes in different sizes, and you can even buy it by the box. Since it's measured by weight, the portion never changes no matter when you visit! It has that crispy tanghuru (candied fruit skewer) texture on the outside while staying moist inside — right up my alley :)
Scorched-rice tteokbokki and protein tteokbokki
They also have tteokbokki, the signature Korean snack, and just the name "scorched-rice tteokbokki" makes my mouth water. The protein-bokki has cabbage and chicken in it, so keep it in mind if you want something healthier.
There was also a good variety of drinks, from zero-sugar options to sugared ones, plus bottled water and more to quench your thirst. I picked a Welch's apple mango, which was ₩2,000.
What to know before ordering Halls Gimbap takeout
Eating in the restaurant means unlimited broth, which is a real perk, but that's not available for takeout, so I figured I'll have to eat there next time. Bonito broth is just perfect for refills, haha.
Since everything is cooked to order, it took about 10 minutes! The packaging was also done neatly, so even on the subway, no smell leaked out. Gimbap smell tends to spread pretty easily, so it's something I worry about on the way home from work, ugh.
How the double cheese egg roll, spam gimbap and dakgangjeong tasted
Seeing the box packed full of gimbap made me feel abundant too. If you're looking for a solo-dining spot near Gyodae Station, I'd recommend Halls Gimbap :) Even just one roll was seriously filling!
The double cheese egg roll was exactly as soft and moist as I expected. The cheese gimbap is universally likable, so kids would probably love it too.
The spam was thick-cut, and since they use real spam, the combination with cucumber was great. It's not too salty and has no carrots in it, so carrot haters could go for this one too.
The dakgangjeong was especially crispy, and having only 6 pieces felt way too little. It was that good, so next time I'm buying a whole box! The owner was kind too — Halls Gimbap all around was a win.
