Daesin Ttangkong-ppang (대신땅콩빵) is a new Namdaemun Market food find for me. The prices are reasonable and the portions are generous, so it won me over right away.

It's chilly enough now that autumn really feels here. It was hot just a few days ago and suddenly it's windbreaker weather, which is kind of amazing. I really love autumn! 🍂🍂

It's almost time for winter snacks, so I went early to try some Namdaemun Market street food. There's a flower market and children's clothing shops nearby, so it's really crowded.

How to get to Daesin Ttangkong-ppang from Hoehyeon Station
Food comes before sightseeing, as the saying goes (even Mount Kumgang is better after a meal), so I decided to try the nutty peanut cakes and egg bread at Daesin Ttangkong-ppang. Come out of Exit 5 of Line 4's Hoehyeon Station and look for the shop across from Maknae Hoetjip, the raw fish restaurant made famous by the TV show Ttogganjip.

It felt like about a 3-minute walk from the exit. There's a handmade dumpling (mandu) place and a hotteok (sweet filled pancake) stall at the start of the alley, so it's fun to look around.

Daesin Ttangkong-ppang sits inside the alley, which gives it even more of a market feel, and once you catch the aroma you'll definitely stop in your tracks. It's a nostalgic snack for me, and I'd been wanting some around this time of year, so it caught my eye right away.

What are the peanut cakes at Daesin Ttangkong-ppang like?
They hand out samples in front of the shop, so I tried one, and I found an autumn snack as good as walnut cakes (hodo-gwaja)!!! After one bite I forgot all about buying peanut butter. It had to be peanut cakes, so I filled up my bag with them.

Daesin Ttangkong-ppang menu and prices
Peanut cakes start at ₩3,000 for 20, and 80 in a box is ₩10,000. Boxed packaging is handy for taking along on a trip, so here's the full lineup!

- 🥜 Peanut cakes: 20 for ₩3,000 / 45 for ₩6,000 / 80 (boxed) for ₩10,000 — they say they can also bake them without peanuts :)
- 🥚 Egg bread (gyeran-ppang): 1 for ₩2,000 / 3 for ₩5,500 / 7 for ₩12,000
- 🥜 Roasted peanuts: 500 g ₩5,000 / 1 kg ₩10,000
- 🧈 Peanut butter: Creamy 150 g ₩4,000, 400 g ₩10,000 / Crunchy 400 g ₩12,000
- 🥂 Peanut smoothie ₩2,500

Selling only bread might have felt like a letdown, so I was glad to see a peanut smoothie to go with it. I was also curious because the shop says it makes the bread from its own batter.

They sell 100% peanut butter too
Daesin Ttangkong-ppang's 100% peanut butter is made only from peanuts with no additives, so I'd feel fine giving it to kids. You can pick by weight, which is nice.

How do you reheat cold egg bread?
A tip posted in the shop says to freeze the egg bread, thaw it, then microwave it for 15–20 seconds, or heat it in an air fryer at 160°C for 4–5 minutes. It's a way to bring it back to life if some time has passed after you buy it.

Egg bread that tastes freshly baked... sounds delicious, right? :) They say it's good with ketchup too, and I have to say the owner really knows food.

Waiting time and how the peanut cakes taste
There was no wait when I bought mine, and luckily a lot of customers showed up behind me. Many people were buying egg bread too :)

I tried one right after buying. The peanut cakes have whole peanuts inside, so there's a bit of chew, and they're surprisingly soft, so I kept eating them like I was feeding on kibble (a joke, haha). Sweet but nutty too! Buying 45 was worth it.

When they packed it, they left the bag open so the cakes wouldn't go soggy, so a lovely smell followed me the whole way :) The owner is friendly and there's plenty to look at around the market, so I'd recommend dropping by Daesin Ttangkong-ppang Namdaemun Market branch when you visit.
