Hapjeong charcoal pork rib BBQ: soy vs spicy ribs compared, Champpoppo
In short
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is a newly opened charcoal-grilled pork rib (jjokgalbi) restaurant in a back alley off Hapjeong Station Exit 6 in Mapo, Seoul. We ordered 2 servings each of soy-glazed ribs (300g) and spicy marinated ribs (300g), finishing the pre-grilled meat over real charcoal for just 1–2 minutes, and the free sides of chicken porridge, corn cheese, pork skin and potatoes were generous. Champpoppo Jjokgalbi is a Hapjeong Korean BBQ spot where you can happily alternate between mild soy ribs and marinated ribs about as spicy as jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork).

A record of visiting Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch, a new Hapjeong pork rib spot near Hapjeong Station, with a friend exhausted from TOEIC studying!.!
Where is Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch, and how far from Hapjeong Station?
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is easy to find — just exit Hapjeong Station Exit 6 and walk a short way into the back alley. It's also about a 6-minute walk from Sangsu Station Exit 1, so it's easily accessible from Hapjeong, Sangsu, or Hongdae!

The exterior has a clean sign and warm lighting that really came alive in the evening! Being tucked into an alley meant less of the main road's bustle, giving it a quiet yet friendly feel😌 Even before stepping inside, a faint charcoal smoke smell drifted out, building anticipation haha

Interior and seating — good for company dinners?
Stepping inside, the bright, clean atmosphere of a newly opened restaurant was the first thing I noticed! With friendly round tables and chairs with backrests, there was almost none of the usual discomfort you get at typical Korean BBQ spots😣

The tables were spaced generously and the aisles were wide, so it seemed like it wouldn't feel cramped even with a big group or company dinner, and conversations were easy since neighboring tables weren't too loud! Each table also has its own ventilation duct, so smoke and smell don't linger — a big plus!

Overall the interior has a retro yet casual vibe, seeming to suit everything from dates to friend gatherings, family meals out, and company dinners!😁

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch menu and prices
The menu!.! As you'd expect from a rib specialty restaurant, soy rib and sauced rib are the signature dishes — ₩14,000 per serving for soy rib, ₩15,000 for sauced rib, and the spice level for sauced rib is selectable🤓
There are also plenty of good-value set menus (chiletan set, pasta set, etc.), plus sides and meal items like pork skin, skirt meat, rice balls, cheese steamed egg, cream pasta, yeolmu kimchi noodles, and doenjang stew, so you can pick according to your taste😚
- Soy rib (300g) ₩14,000 ×2
- Sauced rib (300g) ₩14,000 ×2

And of course, today's drinks haha

The ribs are pre-cooked before serving, so they take a bit of time, but they brought out a ton of side dishes to enjoy in the meantime, so the wait flew by!

The review event is totally worth joining too!

The free chicken porridge, corn cheese, and pork skin
As soon as we ordered, the charcoal appeared~

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is generous with what comes free — cabbage salad, baek kimchi (white kimchi), pickled onion, and various sauces, plus potato slices, pork skin, chicken porridge, and corn cheese all come standard, so there was zero chance of getting bored before the main meat arrived~.~

The free chicken porridge was clean and smooth, gently settling the stomach before the ribs!!

The corn cheese was sweet and savory, and my spoon kept going back for more😙

With the pork skin, grilling slowly with the meaty side down gave it a nice golden, savory finish, and the potato was also a great snack once crisped up!

How to grill pre-cooked ribs — beginner-friendly?
Since the ribs come pre-cooked, you only need to grill them over charcoal for another 1–2 minutes. When the staff first set them on the grill, they oriented the bone side down and kindly told us when to flip, so even a beginner could grill them easily~.~
Best of all, the bone and meat come already half-separated, so pulling it apart by hand was really convenient, and the meat was tender with a good thick layer on the bone, not just bone with nothing left on it🥳 Once you put on the plastic gloves and start pulling the meat apart, you end up devouring it in a trance haha

How does the soy rib taste?
First, the soy rib — the subtle soy marinade soaked deep into the meat, giving it a clean, savory flavor that was excellent!

It's a little different from a typical bulgogi-style soy marinade — milder yet full of umami, and paired with the charcoal aroma, the meat's natural flavor really stood out😋 I never got tired of it and kept reaching for more, to the point I wanted to order extra servings!.!

How spicy is the sauced rib — can spice wimps handle it?
The sauced rib features a slightly sweet-and-spicy marinade! At the mild spice level, it was about as spicy as jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) — moderate enough that even a spice wimp could fully enjoy it☺️
The sauce wasn't just on the surface — it soaked all the way in, so the more you chewed, the more umami came through, with a sweet aftertaste lingering subtly and making it quite addictive!

Final thoughts
Alternating between the two flavors meant there was no chance of getting bored, and their different charms complemented each other really well — overall satisfaction was super high!
To sum up, Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch had great meat quality overall, and with such generous free sides, I felt it was excellent value for money! If you're in Hapjeong wanting to properly dig into some ribs, or looking for a comfortable spot for a date or gathering, I highly recommend Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch!😊 I'm planning to come back and try the pasta set and other sides next time~.~
