The first thing out after ordering was a spicy bean sprout soup! I thought it would be just the standard broth jokbal places serve, but it was much more fiery and refreshing than expected and really woke up my appetite. The crunchy sprouts were great, and the rich broth built the anticipation before the main food even arrived. It seemed like it would go well with the fire jokbal, and I kept going back for more.

What's the basic table setup like?

Besides the main dish, Gwihanjokbal Yeonsinnae lays out kimchi, radish kimchi, assorted sauces and wrap vegetables generously. What I liked was that it isn't just the main dish and nothing else.

Crunchy kimchi and radish kimchi, assorted sauces, and plenty of lettuce, cucumber, carrot, garlic and chili peppers let us eat it any way we liked.

It's great for wrapping jokbal and bossam, and swapping sauce combinations was fun. The table was so generous that I could see why this place is known for bossam in Eunpyeong.

Is adding makguksu to jokbal worth it?

The makguksu (buckwheat noodles) we added was great to alternate with the jokbal and felt like a must-order. It came out right away, and with its sweet-and-sour sauce and chewy noodles it looked like a perfect match for jokbal.

A bite of jokbal, then a bite of makguksu, and you can enjoy it to the end without getting tired of the richness, so it felt like a must-order.

With a table this generous just to look at, I felt everyone would be satisfied at a company dinner or group gathering. 😊
