Korean breakfast in Jungmun, Jeju: rose-vine path, farm-grown greens
In short
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju, that specializes in mackerel ssam-bap (mackerel with rice and leaf wraps) and serves breakfast. On a Jeju trip, the writer had braised mackerel with kimchi, grilled tilefish (okdom) and abalone-and-hijiki pot rice for breakfast. The self-serve corner of ssam greens grown on the restaurant's own farm and the rose-vine entrance path stood out most. Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap: a hearty breakfast in Jungmun, Jeju

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥) is a mackerel ssam-bap restaurant in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju, and it serves breakfast. I wanted a proper filling meal first thing during my Jeju trip, so I came here.
Mackerel ssam-bap is the signature dish, and the table came loaded with fresh homegrown vegetables, lots of side dishes and generous fish dishes. I was really satisfied. The combo of braised mackerel with kimchi, grilled tilefish and abalone-hijiki pot rice felt like a healthy meal you can only have in Jeju.
The side dishes that arrive before the meal were varied too: soft tofu, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), salad, seasoned bean sprouts, seasoned radish, braised black beans, seasoned cucumber, garlic and more. They all go well with fish, so I never got bored during the meal.

Parking and the rose-vine entrance

There's a big parking lot in front, so parking is no worry. Rose vines run along quite a long stretch of the entrance path, and roses were in bloom. It must have been gorgeous in May and June! People were taking tons of photos for Instagram. Apparently hydrangeas and pink muhly grass have bloomed here at other times too.
The exterior is tidy and the place is large, so it looks good for family meals or groups. Inside, the tables are spaced widely and kept clean, so I could eat comfortably.
How were the abalone hijiki pot rice, grilled tilefish and braised mackerel?

Nutty abalone and hijiki pot rice, plus scorched rice
When I lifted the lid of the abalone and hijiki pot rice, a nutty aroma spread first. With abalone and hijiki together, the texture was nice and chewy, and the glossy rice stayed good to the last bite. You can even make nurungji (scorched rice soup) from it, which made the meal even more filling.
Crispy-outside, moist-inside grilled tilefish
Okdom (tilefish) is a fish you have to try when you come to Jeju. The outside was grilled crisp and the flesh was moist, coming off softly with just a touch of the chopsticks. Salty yet clean in flavor, it paired really well with the pot rice, and it was tasty without dipping much in soy sauce. A great Jeju breakfast.
The braised mackerel with kimchi was the most memorable
The braised mackerel with kimchi was the most memorable dish of the day. It had plenty of well-fermented kimchi and big pieces of mackerel, and when I lifted the kimchi, the look of it made me exclaim out loud.
It was spicy with a deep savory flavor, and the mackerel was soft with no fishy smell. Eaten with the kimchi, it kept making me want more rice. Putting fresh ssam greens on top made it even better.
Homegrown ssam greens without limit: the self-serve corner

The most impressive part of Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was the self-serve ssam corner. Just like the sign saying "vegetables grown directly on our farm," you can take as much lettuce, napa cabbage, perilla leaves, kale and other greens as you like, and they were really fresh.
There are many side dishes too, and you can freely grab more if you run out, which I liked. Above all, even though the place is big, the air conditioning was so strong it was lovely and cool, haha. Lots of celebrity autographs hang on the walls, so you can tell plenty of people already come here.

Verdict: who is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap for?
- A place where you can eat as much fresh, farm-grown ssam as you want
- A satisfying meal with many side dishes and a well-stocked self-serve bar
- The nutty flavor of abalone and hijiki pot rice, a filling meal
- The clean taste of golden-grilled tilefish
- Deeply flavored braised mackerel with kimchi, a real rice thief
If you want a hearty breakfast or lunch in Jungmun, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is worth a visit. I recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy Jeju local food together with fresh ssam greens.
