In short

Low Five Anguk is a casual Western restaurant in a red-brick building on Bukchon-ro in Jongno, Seoul, right by Anguk Station (Line 3) and across from the Constitutional Court. With no expectations, the writer joined the queue remotely and ordered a half-and-half corn pizza and Tex-Mex taco pizza, a truffle cream pasta and a classic Caesar salad, and was struck by how good both pizzas were. Verdict: Low Five Anguk's two pizzas are highly recommended, while the truffle cream pasta was surprisingly ordinary.

Low Five Anguk: the Anguk Station pizza I went to with zero expectations

Low Five Anguk (로우파이브 안국) served me one of the most shocking dishes I've eaten this year. And the shock was entirely positive. Let's go see what made my eyes pop.

Honestly, I was half skeptical. Actually, I had no expectations at all. My bar for pizza is low, and I'd written this place off as just an Instagram hotspot.

Of course there's a wait. You queue through Catch Table. The whole neighborhood is full of hot spots, so there's no time to get bored. Time flies while you watch foreign tourists taking photos. The red-brick exterior feels very Boston. When the alert tells you to come in, you find a neat Western-style restaurant. I chose a corner seat so I could survey the whole room.

I had ordered the menu in advance while waiting. Only extra orders go through the QR code. Half-and-half corn pizza and Tex-Mex taco pizza + truffle cream pasta + classic Caesar salad.

Starting with the classic Caesar salad. Fresh and tangy, with a nutty richness on top. They grate loads of cheese over it, and I grabbed a fistful with the tongs and dropped it on. It tastes American. That salad I used to eat all the time in the US. A taste that earns the name "classic."

Now the main event: the pizza. Corn pizza. Tex-Mex taco pizza. Insane. Ordering them half-and-half was a stroke of genius in itself. I ate the taco pizza first. In all my days I've never had a pizza like this. An impact that blew past my threshold for stimulation. I can't remember a single bite hitting this hard in a long time. Even a tongue that rarely gets surprised was startled. It recreates the taste of American-style Mexican food.

The corn pizza. Wow. Still shaken by the taco, I got shaken again by the corn. The sweetness of corn fills your whole mouth. It tastes like they dumped in an entire can of corn. But it isn't an artificial taste, just pure sweetness itself. And the dough is so chewy and crisp. It's the number one pizza for Korean tastes.

The truffle cream pasta. Surprisingly ordinary. Just a thick, tasty cream pasta. Everything got buried under the effect of the pizzas before it.

From the atmosphere to the taste, it's perfect. The wait had a reason. A great restaurant near Anguk Station on Line 3, a great restaurant across from the Constitutional Court. This place is crazy.

Where is Low Five Anguk and how does the waiting work?

Red-brick exterior of Low Five Anguk

Low Five Anguk is in a red-brick building at 20-3 Bukchon-ro. It became famous in Suwon first, then expanded to Seoul. While other people were making Catch Table reservations, I quickly joined the remote waiting list on my phone.

Waiting in the Bukchon-ro alleys

The building next to Low Five Anguk is great too. This whole alley is pretty great. Foreigners kept walking back and forth taking lots of photos.

My legs hurt, so I sat down. Every single building is a work of art. The wait never gets boring.

Low Five Anguk interior and self-service bar

Low Five Anguk was full. As a reward for waiting, we got a seat further inside. The interior blends West and East.

Jalapeño. A window seat. The mirror is set at an angle, so you can sneakily peek at what the other tables are eating.

You can grab cutlery and napkins yourself from the middle. If you didn't order a drink, you can get water here too. Low Five Anguk is a casual restaurant. Cutlet ready.

Small touches like this mirror interior are a nice surprise. Sorry about all the work of blurring faces (mosaic), but never mind.

The classic Caesar salad tastes like the one I ate in America

The classic Caesar salad at Low Five Anguk comes with cheese grated on without holding back. Even Julius Caesar himself wouldn't grate on more cheese than this.

Scooping up a fistful. This is truly the exact taste of that Caesar salad I ate in America.

Half-and-half corn pizza and Tex-Mex taco pizza: what do they taste like?

At Low Five Anguk, I ordered the corn pizza and the Tex-Mex taco pizza half-and-half. I wanted to taste both.

The level of char is perfect. It took in the full energy of the wood-fired oven.

Left: Tex-Mex taco pizza. Right: corn pizza. The corn pizza seems to be the signature.

The Tex-Mex taco pizza. Insane. What a powerful punch. The intensity of a flavor I haven't felt in a really long time.

It has shrimp too. They recreated the Mexican tacos you eat in America and put them right on a pizza. Really delicious.

Truffle cream pasta: thick and rich, but ordinary

The truffle cream pasta at Low Five Anguk is a thick, rich cream pasta topped with oyster mushrooms.

Well-grilled oyster mushrooms on top lift the texture a notch. A thick cream pasta, exactly the taste you imagine. A twist of truffle adds aroma.

Table with salad, half-and-half pizza and pasta

With these three dishes we were nearly bursting. But we could finish it all, because I'd never had a pizza like this.

You can feel how thick and rich it is. It can get heavy, so you need to eat the Caesar salad in between.

Corn pizza: sweetness that isn't artificial

The corn pizza at Low Five Anguk surprised me once more. It tastes like a whole can of corn slammed on top. But without that artificial sweetness, as if everything was drawn naturally from the corn. My mouth waters. Highly recommended.

Low Five Anguk atmosphere and overall verdict

The atmosphere kills. The staff are all good-looking, one and all. Come to think of it, they're all men. It's aimed at female customers. Try enjoying some wine with it too.

Low Five Anguk, a new era for pizza. The corn pizza and Tex-Mex taco pizza are a must. No other place has this atmosphere with this impact of flavor.
