Hoega 🐟, a budget sashimi takeout spot in Sokcho. When you're at the beach you've gotta eat sashimi, right? But usually tourist-spot pricing means every sashimi place is expensive, and even takeout ends up costing a fair bit. So I hunted around and found Hoega (회家) — sashimi you can pack up without breaking the bank.

There's a fish tank behind the shop, and when I went to check it out —

there was a cat! \(@^0^@)/ Looks like the shop gives it leftover bits of sashimi. It was munching away happily until a person showed up, then it bolted — sorry for startling you 💦💦

How to order Hoega takeout: call an hour ahead, K-Mart out front
I took mine to go to eat back at the accommodation!! If you don't want to wait around for your order, I'd recommend calling an hour ahead of time. I called in advance, did my shopping at the market, and by the time I got back the sashimi was ready to pick up right away.

There's a K-Mart right in front, so the route for grabbing other drinks (like soju, beer ^^ㅋ,,) was super convenient too.

Hoega sashimi takeout spread at the accommodation
I unpacked everything and set it out on the table, and it ended up completely packed with food. Usually when you get sashimi takeout it's a pretty stripped-down setup, but they packed in so much extra stuff for us (T_T). Hoega, the budget sashimi takeout spot in Sokcho, is run by a couple who have been doing this for 30 years already.

Ssamjang with minced garlic, vinegar-chili sauce, wasabi, ginger, pickled radish, radish sprouts, sliced garlic, dried radish strips.

Lettuce wraps.

It was hot out, so I got mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) to go as well.

Mulhoe broth. There are noodles in there, and a tomato too. Is the tomato meant for dessert after? ^.^ㅋ Not sure if it's meant to go into the soup, but I just threw it in and ate it that way.

Sushi rice and aged kimchi.

Hoega small mixed sashimi for 43,000 won: portion and taste
For the price, the amount is genuinely huge. The shop describes it as 1.5 servings, but it felt more like 2 servings to me?? Apparently the owner hates any fishy taste, so they're careful to use only fresh fish so there's no fishy smell.

Sashimi near the sea really does taste different. Super chewy, fresh flavor. Being a Sokcho sashimi place, the mixed platter changes with the season based on whatever's caught fresh in the East Sea (e.g. marmi, sea bass, striped mullet, red seabream, yellowtail, mackerel, herring, gizzard shad, black porgy, etc.)

I also made my own sushi with the rice they gave us, a dab of wasabi, and seaweed.

The sashimi's so good the drinks go down easy too {{{(>_<)}}}

Hoega's sweet and tangy mulhoe with tomato, perfect on a hot day
The mulhoe portion was also huge. Loaded with abalone, veggies, and plenty of sashimi, and the broth itself is sweet and tangy and delicious — a perfect dish to perk up your appetite on a hot day like this. Highly recommend!! They said the sashimi that goes into the mulhoe, hoedeopbap, and hoe-guksu is all cut from live fish freshly caught right when you order, so it's a generous, hearty amount.

The yellowtail was nicely marbled with fat and delicious too. Getting this composition, this quantity, at this price felt like such great value. Hoega, the budget sashimi takeout spot in Sokcho — the taste is definitely there too, so next time I'm in Sokcho, I think I'll be coming back to Hoega.
