Where is Sunji Café in Yangsan?
Sunji Café (순지 카페) is a big bakery café inside Yangsan Food Town in Hataek-myeon, Yangsan. Today was a holiday with typhoon rain all day long. I had an errand near Tongdosa Temple in the morning, and I remembered a friend once telling me about a place with really good rice bread, and since it was close by, I stopped in! It's the big café Sunji in Hataek-myeon, Yangsan.
Yangsan Food Town is a cluster of restaurants like Tongdo Amso Galbi, The Dogejang and Yongdeokjang Kodari, and Sunji Café sits right among them! Maybe because of the all-day rain, there weren't many cars in the parking lot, sniff. On a nice day this place would have a totally full lot!
What is Sunji Café like on a rainy day?
On a rainy day Sunji Café has its own rich charm, so I didn't mind the rain at all! It's a big bakery café, but it also serves lots of drinks made with handmade gelato, so my expectations were high. Leaving the stylishly decorated outdoor garden behind, let's head inside^^
The moment you walk in, lush flower petals greet you so luxuriously and beautifully! Everyone loves flowers, so it's definitely a photo spot 🤳 📷. True to a big Yangsan café, the space is wide and pleasant, with floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides so it never feels stuffy. I was really happy with it!
Honestly, I haven't been into big cafés lately, but after visiting Sunji Café today, that changed! If you asked me to recommend one big café in Busan or Yangsan, I'd happily recommend Sunji Café^^ Yangsan Food Town also has many restaurants that older folks love, so it would be great to visit Sunji Café after a meal.
How is the bakery at Sunji Café different from other big cafés?
Sunji Café isn't just a big café with nice interiors. It's packed with quality baked goods, and that's what clearly set it apart from other big cafés! Instead of the usual breads and cakes, there were lots of baked goods unique to Sunji Café.
The red yeast rice bread my friend raved about
Especially the red yeast rice bread (홍국쌀식빵) my friend raved about, you absolutely have to buy it... Once you try it you'll definitely buy it again, it's really, really good! The texture is like eating rice cake rather than bread, not just chewy (쫀득쫀득) but "jjondok-jjondok" (my own word for extra chewy), it's just so good haha
How was the handmade gelato at Sunji Café?
Sunji Café is famous for handmade gelato, so I ordered the salted gelato and a matcha gelato latte. I deliberately took a seat at the floor-to-ceiling window to watch the rain outside!
From the seat with a full view of the garden, seeing the fountain and palm trees made me feel like I was on Jeju Island, which made it even more atmospheric and lovely.
What is this gelato?! The more I get to know Sunji Café, the more I like everything! The rich matcha gelato was so good, and the basic salted gelato had a really charming flavor too. You'll know once you come and try it yourself 🤣
Just a taste, then 2 more loaves to go
I'd already eaten a meal, so I planned to just taste the red yeast rice bread I'd been looking forward to, but wow, my hand keeps reaching for it haha. I think older folks would love it, so I'm taking 2 more loaves home. Famous breads are famous for a reason 😊
Sunji Café's red yeast rice bread made me realize that even plain bread on its own can be this good!^^
Is the 2nd floor of Sunji Café worth a look?
This big café near Tongdosa in Yangsan has a 2nd floor as well as the 1st, and I was curious so I went up! The 2nd floor is also spacious and clean, and the green potted plants here and there were very soothing to the eyes!
I highly recommend Sunji Café in Yangsan. Do take your parents there once!
Looking down at the 1st floor through the 2nd-floor glass let me take in the whole of Sunji Café, which was nice! I was so glad to discover such a good Yangsan café on this rainy day^^
Lately I find myself realizing, as I get older, that a rainy landscape can be really pretty too.
