Suwon smoked BBQ chicken on a rainy day: Haenggung Jangjak
In short
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak (행궁장작한방통닭) is a wood-fired chicken restaurant on Suwon Chicken Street, along Haenggung-ro in Paldal-gu, Suwon. On a rainy day the writer ordered the smoked BBQ seasoned wood-fired chicken (₩25,000), which came as a whole bird on a hot iron plate with rice underneath that crisped into nurungji (scorched rice), and eating the two together was half the fun. Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak suits Suwon day-trippers who want a filling meal of roasted chicken and iron-plate scorched rice instead of fried chicken.

What is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak on Suwon Chicken Street?
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak (행궁장작한방통닭) is a wood-fired chicken restaurant on Suwon Chicken Street. A whole chicken comes out on a hot iron plate, and you also get the nurungji (scorched rice) underneath. You can't come to Suwon and skip the chicken! haha This time, instead of crunchy fried chicken, I went for golden wood-fired roast chicken 🍗

The rain had left the alley damp, and with the lights on it felt quite atmospheric. I also spotted the neatly stacked firewood in front of Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak. A view that suited today's menu perfectly, even before going in!

They'd left the windows open, so it had a bit of an outdoor-pub vibe going on.

First came kimchi, tangy pickled vegetables, and sauce and salt for the chicken. The sauce comes separately, so you're not stuck with one flavor and can dip to your taste ><

We poured our drinks too. Cheers! Sitting down to wait for good food while exploring Suwon is such a nice time, haha.
How did the smoked BBQ wood-fired chicken taste?
The smoked BBQ seasoned wood-fired chicken at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak came out steaming on the hot iron plate, and it looked appetizing right away. The skin was an even golden brown, and I couldn't wait to tear off a piece.

I put my hand next to it so you can see the size. With a whole chicken on the plate, the table suddenly felt generous!

When I pulled the meat apart with a fork, white meat showed under the skin. I started with just a little salt, then moved on to dipping it in the sauce.

Having kimchi or pickled vegetables between bites of chicken refreshes your palate. Funny how often your hand goes for these sides when eating chicken, haha.

Rice under the chicken and iron-plate scorched rice
As you eat the wood-fired chicken at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, rice hiding underneath makes its appearance! I pulled off bits of chicken and scooped them up with the rice, which turned one plate of chicken into a filling meal.
The bottom of the iron plate was toasted and crusty, so scraping it up like nurungji was fun too. Alternating between the soft rice and the scorched bits, I kept reaching for the rice as much as the chicken 😍😍 This was honestly the kicker… ❤️❤️❤️ A nurungji paradise.
