Some days you just crave really good tonkatsu (pork cutlet)😊 Recently I went looking for a Kangwon National University tonkatsu spot with a crispy coating and juicy meat, and ended up at Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Hyoja Branch (정성카츠 춘천효자점)!
They use only domestic Korean pork (handon), and having eaten there, I was happy with the taste, the clean restaurant and the friendly service, so I wanted to share it.
Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Hyoja Branch: hours and parking

The restaurant is open 9:00 to 23:00 on weekdays and 9:00 to 22:00 on weekends. You can park to the right of the storefront, though it's a bit crowded.

It's a 3-minute walk from the back gate of Kangwon National University! The menu board out front caught my eye right away. You could see all the different dishes at a glance, and they all looked delicious😆

Atmosphere with trees visible through full-height windows
As a newly opened place, it felt very clean and pleasant overall. We came for an early lunch and it filled up immediately, and there were lots of delivery orders too. Seems like I picked a good Chuncheon restaurant👏

The interior is stylish and pretty too, and the wall is made of full-height windows, so it feels really open.

There are seats from tables for two to roomy ones for bigger groups, so it works for solo meals, dates, family dinners or meals with friends.

I'd recommend Jeongseong Katsu as a date spot too! The green trees outside the window were so pretty that I was in a good mood the whole meal🌿

Jeongseong Katsu menu: set meals to pasta
Looking over the menu, there were many kinds of tonkatsu and the set meals looked really generous. The sets, which let you try several things at once, seem to be the popular choice.

What impressed me personally is that they sell pasta too! You rarely see that at a tonkatsu specialist, and at under ₩10,000 it's easy on the wallet and looked fine for lunch. True to a Chuncheon restaurant, the choice was wide👍

What two of us ordered: mixed katsu set, cold soba fillet set, cheese katsu
- Jeongseong mixed katsu set (정성모듬카츠정식)
- Cold soba + fillet katsu set
- Cheese katsu, 2 pieces
We were both really hungry, so we ordered a feast😂
Jeongseong mixed katsu set
The signature mixed katsu set comes with tenderloin katsu, loin katsu and fried shrimp, plus cabbage salad, curry, rice and udon broth. Crispy, juicy katsu, and the lineup alone was very satisfying👏

Cold soba + fillet katsu set
The cold soba (buckwheat noodle) + fillet katsu set comes with 4 pieces of tonkatsu and pan soba. Dipping the noodles lightly into the icy soba broth with slush floating in it was heavenly! It really suits hot weather. Chopped scallion, grated radish and wasabi come along too, so you can add them to taste.

Cheese katsu, 2 pieces
The cheese katsu we added made me glad we ordered it. It's packed with soft cheese, so if you like cheese tonkatsu you should definitely try it. I came expecting a good Chuncheon restaurant, and the food was all delicious.

Jeongseong Katsu sauce: go for the spicy one
The basic tonkatsu sauce is good, but the spicy sauce was the kicker. And maybe because it's handon, the meat was really tender and full of juice. Crispy outside, moist inside, dipped generously in sauce: how could it not be good? If you visit, do try the spicy sauce too :)

The curry that came with the mixed katsu set was good too. It had a richer flavor than I expected, and eaten with rice it was nice and filling.

Ordering and side-dish refills on a table tablet
What I especially liked is that every table has a tablet for ordering and even for requesting side-dish refills! The staff were friendly too, so it was a pleasant meal😊

They're also running a Naver receipt review event, so you might want to join in if you visit. Crispy, juicy tonkatsu, icy cold soba, a clean restaurant and friendly service: I was happy with all of it at Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Hyoja Branch! If you're looking for tasty tonkatsu near Kangwon National University, I recommend giving it a try⭐️
