Where is Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada?

Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada (제철담은 마포바다) is a brand-new sashimi restaurant on the big Baekbeom-ro road in Mapo, a 1-minute walk from Exit 3 of Daeheung Station. I went to check out this newly opened Mapo sashimi spot in Daeheung-dong!

Where to park for Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada

You need to use the entrance parking lot of the car repair shop above! There's no dedicated parking support, so parking at a nearby public car park works too.

Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada sits right on the main road, so you can spot it as you pass by. There were congratulatory opening wreaths out front too, so it really catches your eye.

Fish tanks and dining room at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada

The restaurant has a huge fish tank full of all kinds of fish, and what stood out most to me was the live shrimp! There were tons of other live fish too.

Inside, there are roughly 15 tables for 4, I think! The interior was super clean and nice.

The signature items at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada are the set menus! The Value Set for 2 is ₩79,000, the Premium Set for 3–4 is ₩129,000, and the Signature Set for 4 is ₩151,000.

We ordered the Value Set for 2, plus salt-grilled live shrimp and the spicy fish stew.

Can you get raw shrimp on the side with the Value Set for 2?

The Value Set at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada comes out as one whole spread, like at a Korean restaurant! So cool.

In the set we ordered, 2 raw shrimp come along with the assorted sashimi, but we honestly wanted raw shrimp way more than grilled shrimp, so we asked if we could have them separately, saying we'd peel them ourselves, and they gave us raw shrimp on their own!

Abalone porridge and side dishes

A lettuce salad and wrap vegetables come out as standard.

The abalone innard porridge and the seaweed soup were warm and so delicious. Definitely eat them first while they're hot!!

The side dishes were really good too.

How are the early-season October yellowtail and mullet sushi?

Yellowtail season had just started, so a little yellowtail came with the assorted sashimi at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada, and it was honestly so good, T_T It's still the very start of the season, so I wondered if it would even be tasty, but it really was.

They say the sashimi is whatever is best that day! It can change a little from day to day, but I like that you get the freshest fish.

The sushi comes at 2 pieces per person, and since it's mullet sushi, it was really chewy and got sweeter the more I chewed!

What a neat, pretty spread! Dunking the yellowtail deep in wasabi soy sauce is sooo good.

Steamed egg (gyeran-jjim) came out hot too, and we ate the sashimi piece by piece! Raw shrimp heart 🤍

Grilled shrimp heads and late-season grilled gizzard shad

The grilled shrimp heads at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada were so good, maybe with garlic butter? Real shrimp is delicious all the way to the head.

And even grilled gizzard shad at the very, very end of its season! It was really nutty and so tasty.

Adding 25 live shrimp for two: half raw, half grilled

The two of us finished the set for 2... so at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada we ordered 25 salt-grilled live shrimp (₩65,000) and a spicy fish stew on top. This time too, we asked to grill only 10 and get the other 15 as live shrimp.

The live shrimp were really flipping around, T_T

The grilled shrimp were sweet and so good, but

why is raw shrimp so delicious? They were totally plump and bouncy, and so good.

Finishing with spicy fish stew (maeuntang)

Of course we finished with the spicy fish stew (maeuntang)! The stew at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada was packed with fish meat, and the broth was so refreshing, it just slid right down!

Would I go back to Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada?

From the shrimp to the sashimi to the stew, everything was delicious at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada, a sashimi restaurant in Mapo's Daeheung-dong. Whenever I'm nearby and craving raw fish, I'll definitely come back. Recommended!
