What kind of sashimi restaurant is Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada?
Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada (제철담은 마포바다) is a sashimi restaurant on Baekbeom-ro in Daeheung-dong, and I was really happy with it: generous sashimi, seafood and side dishes! I live in Mapo and have done quite a few food tours around here, haha, and this one stood out among them.

We love fresh sashimi, so we're always hunting down raw fish restaurants around Mapo. Needless to say, the sashimi at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is chewy and sweet, haha. The seafood is fresh too, and with so many side dishes it's just fun to eat.

When the cool autumn breeze blows like it does these days, you crave seasonal seafood even more, right?

From nutty gizzard shad to plump shrimp and fresh mixed sashimi, you can enjoy it all here, so I wanted to introduce Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada to anyone looking for a good drinking spot in Daeheung-dong.
How is the 2-person value set laid out?
The 2-person value set at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada comes as a second table of food slotted onto the regular table, so the sashimi and side dishes all arrive at once. We ordered the 2-person value set this time, and it looked really generous from the moment it was set down! Seeing the sashimi and side dishes all spread out together put me in a good mood, haha.

Basic sides: salad, seaweed soup, steamed egg, abalone innards porridge
The basics were salad, corn salad and side dishes, plus seaweed soup (miyeokguk) and steamed egg (gyeran-jjim). The abalone innards porridge (jeonbok-naejangjuk) was served in a generous portion, which surprised me. It was nutty and soft, great to eat a spoonful at a time,

and the warm seaweed soup, sipped between bites, went well as a side for drinks. With everything from sashimi to all kinds of sides on one table, picking at them one by one is a real pleasure!

How were the mixed sashimi and raw shrimp?
The mixed sashimi, the main dish at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada, was as good as I'd hoped. The flesh is chewy yet sweet, and you taste the freshness right away. If you love sashimi, I think you'll be satisfied, haha.

The 2-person value set also included 2 pieces of raw shrimp. Springy in texture and sweet, they were a treat. Since I like fresh seafood, I really liked having something like this come with the set.

Grilled gizzard shad and sushi
I enjoyed the grilled gizzard shad (jeoneo), an autumn seasonal fish, too. Its nutty flavor kept me reaching for more, and with the sushi on the side the set felt really well put together. It's not just sashimi and done; you get to enjoy several dishes together, which made it even better!
The highlight: grilled live shrimp and butter-grilled shrimp heads
The highlight of the 2-person value set at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is the grilled shrimp. You grill fresh, still-jumping live shrimp yourself right at the table.

As the shrimp cook they turn so appetizing that you can't wait to eat them, haha.

After you finish the shrimp, collect the heads separately and the owner turns them into butter-grilled shrimp heads, and this was a real treat! With that nutty butter flavor, you can enjoy even the heads.

Grilling the shrimp is fun, and being able to finish with butter-grilled heads made it memorable. If you like shrimp, you have to try it!!
Is there a visitor event at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada?
When we visited, Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada was also running a review event.

If you take part, you get 2 fried shrimp and 2 croquettes, so keep that in mind if you're visiting! Adding these extras makes the meal even more generous.

Is it good for family gatherings or company dinners?
Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada works well for a family meal, drinks with friends or a company dinner (hoesik) with coworkers. The owner was also really kind throughout our meal. At a place you're visiting for the first time, the food matters, but friendly service keeps you in a good mood the whole meal, right? Thanks to that, we ate comfortably, chatted and had a lovely time.

With not just sashimi but grilled gizzard shad, sushi, grilled shrimp and butter-grilled heads, it would suit a bigger group too. We left full from the 2-person value set, but next time I'd like to try other seafood dishes, haha.

If you want plenty of fresh sashimi and seasonal seafood in Mapo, give Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada a visit! Remember the grilled shrimp and butter-grilled heads especially. We enjoyed tasty sashimi with a full range of side dishes.
With fresh seafood capturing the season of the sea and a neat spread, Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is a place I'd recommend to anyone hunting for good food in Mapo like us. Next time I'm craving seasonal dishes, I'd like to go back :)
