Osan Segyo shabu kalguksu with dessert fried rice course: Dongchundang

In short

Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Osan Dugok Branch is a 140-pyeong shabu shabu and kalguksu restaurant that opened this March on Seobu-ro in Osan, Gyeonggi. After a greasy summer holiday, the spicy broth was the pick, and the course ran from a pre-meal yeolmu barley bibimbap (young radish and barley rice) through shabu shabu, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) and dessert fried rice, with unlimited makgeolli, ice cream and ppeongtwigi (puffed rice cakes) at the self-serve bar. Dongchundang is a solid choice for a filling family meal or a group get-together.

Why shabu shabu kalguksu after a heavy summer holiday?

After coming back from summer vacation having eaten way too much greasy food, I was craving a light shabu shabu kalguksu loaded with vegetables.

So I headed to a well-known shabu shabu spot in Osan Segyo, Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Osan Dugok Branch.

Maybe because it's only been open since this March, the place was really clean and pleasant. It's a massive 140-pyeong store, so the tables were spaced generously and the whole layout felt spacious — great for a family meal or a group gathering.

Unlimited makgeolli at the Dongchundang self-serve bar

Inside Dongchundang Osan Dugok Branch there's also a basic self-bar. It had everything from makgeolli to coffee, tea, ppeongtwigi (puffed rice snacks), and extra side dishes, so I could easily grab more of whatever I ran low on while eating.

What really stood out here was the unlimited makgeolli. It was sweeter and tastier than I expected, so it paired well with the shabu shabu, a cup at a time. If you're a makgeolli fan, this alone might make you love the place.

There were also baby chairs available, so it was easy to visit with young kids.

Spicy broth and the pre-meal yeolmu barley bibimbap

You choose either clear or spicy broth — we went with the spicy one. While it was set to boil, we started with the appetizer(?) of yeolmu (young radish) barley bibimbap that came out first. It was nutty and the yeolmu kimchi was delicious, really waking up the appetite.

Adding meat and vegetables into the broth

What I liked most is that it's not just shabu shabu and done — you get a hearty spread of vegetables, meat and kalguksu too, so it really felt like a full meal.

Once we'd finished off the meat, veggies, dumplings and mushrooms,

Shabu kalguksu simmered in the rich broth

...it was time for the kalguksu (knife-cut noodles). Because the broth had been simmering the whole time, it turned out rich and really tasty. With all the umami from the shabu shabu ingredients added in, dropping the noodles in felt like eating a totally different dish. Even though I was already pretty full, the broth was so good I ended up finishing off the noodles too.

Finishing with dessert fried rice and free ice cream

And to finish, there was dessert fried rice! The geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi) was so good that even though I was full, I piled it on top of the fried rice and cleaned my plate 🤣 Eating shabu shabu, then kalguksu, then fried rice in order made for a genuinely filling meal.

After the meal there was avocado, ice cream and ppeongtwigi ready to go, so dessert was well covered too. Filling up on warm kalguksu and then finishing with sweet, cool ice cream was just perfect.

It's a great spot to take your parents for a meal, and I'd recommend Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Osan Dugok Branch if you're looking for a place for family gatherings, group dinners, or a meal out with kids 🤍
