What kind of restaurant is Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch?
Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a fresh galbi (raw marinated pork/beef rib) restaurant occupying the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors at 38-1 Jongno in Jung-gu, Daegu. It's open daily from 17:00 to 01:00 the next day, last order at 00:00, and there's a nearby public parking lot about a 3-minute walk away.

We were wandering around Jongno and Dongseongno trying to figure out dinner when we landed on 'Jangjak Saenggalbi' Jongno branch. Hearing we could try Uiseong garlic fresh galbi, pork jowl fresh galbi, and marinated galbi all at once, we went straight there with our kid in tow — and spoiler: the dish we expected the least from ended up winning us over 🙌

It sits right in the middle of the Jongno strip, super walkable from Dongseongno. We parked at a public lot and walked about 3–4 minutes past pretty little streets and shopfronts — a solid spot for a dinner meetup. The sign alone had presence, exactly what you'd expect from a well-known fresh galbi restaurant on Jongno in Daegu 🔥
Inside Jangjak Saenggalbi: floors 1 through 3

With seating split across three floors, it felt easy for both families and larger groups to find a comfortable table.

Maybe because it was dinner rush, but every packed table had the faint smell of charcoal-grilled galbi drifting through the room, and the second we walked in, both anticipation and hunger hit at once.
The menu and what three of us spent

Beyond the signature charcoal galbi, the newer Uiseong garlic fresh galbi and the pork jowl fresh galbi and marinated galbi made for a great lineup to compare side by side.

Party: 2 adults, 1 elementary-age child
- Uiseong garlic fresh galbi x1 – ₩58,000
- Pork jowl fresh galbi x1 – ₩11,000
- Pork jowl marinated galbi x1 – ₩11,000
- Steamed egg x1 – ₩2,000
- Charcoal doenjang jjigae x1 – ₩5,000
- Rice x2 – ₩2,000
- Soju x1, non-alcoholic beer x1 – ₩8,000
- Total order: ₩97,000

On top of the 500g of Uiseong garlic fresh galbi, we added both pork jowl dishes,

and it turned out to be more than enough for two adults and a kid to work through all three cuts of galbi over dinner.
The banchan and basic table setting

The basic table setting came neatly arranged on a fitted tray with everything we needed,

and among those, the mu-saengchae (seasoned radish salad) and jaeraegi (spicy fermented radish) stood out the most,

and the other sauces and side dishes all paired beautifully with the three types of galbi.
What does the Uiseong garlic fresh galbi taste like?

True to its name, the Uiseong garlic fresh galbi had a clear, unmistakable garlic aroma. From photos I expected thick-cut slices, but it turned out thinner than I imagined — still not dry at all, chewing through tender and soft.

Instead of drowning the meat in salty sauce, it's the type where a sharp, sweet garlic scent builds the more you chew, so anyone who loves garlic should try this as their first order off the signature menu.

That said, if you're sensitive to strong garlic, I'd suggest pairing a 500g plate with something else rather than ordering it alone — but it's still worth trying at least once, no regrets.

When the meat came out, they also gave us a generous side of garlic sauce to spoon on before grilling and dip into afterward — we used it liberally.
Pork jowl fresh galbi: the real star of the night

Honestly, the pork jowl fresh galbi was the dish we ordered with the lowest expectations, but it turned out to be the true star of dinner. It started off with a samgyeopsal-like savoriness, but the more we chewed, a much richer, more intense, fattier flavor than pork belly spread through — way beyond what we expected.
It's a completely different texture from the usual fresh pork galbi we're used to, and it genuinely surprised us with an "oh, this exists too?" moment. If you prefer cleaner, lighter meat or you love a deep, rich meaty flavor, this is a must-try either way. It also paired the best with all the side dishes on the table.

Pork jowl marinated galbi, easy to share with a child
The pork jowl marinated galbi was the reliably good, sweet-and-salty flavor everyone already pictures in their head. Familiar and foolproof, it was easy to share with our kid,

and it ended up striking a nice balance between the sharp aroma of the garlic galbi and the intense richness of the pork jowl fresh galbi.

Firewood doenjang jjigae, steamed egg and the complimentary cypress-steamed dish
The charcoal doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) had a somewhat different character from the usual savory doenjang jjigae you know.
The color sat somewhere between a regular doenjang and a spicier version, and the sharp broth reminded me of a spicy beef radish soup. Every time the meat started feeling heavy, we'd take a spoonful and keep going back for more — by the end we were mixing rice into it like a hangover soup, haha.

The steamed egg we ordered alongside was cooked just right, smooth and easy to eat, and a nice bit of scorched rice formed at the edges that our kid happily scraped off. Haha.
They also brought out a complimentary cypress-steamed dish, which added even more variety alongside the different types of galbi.

And the bean sprouts laid underneath gave a nice change of texture when eaten with the different galbi cuts.
