Gyeongju ssambap restaurant for couples: snail bulgogi, Neulbom
In short
Neulbom (늘봄) is a hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) restaurant in Bomun-danji, Gyeongju, that has served snail ssambap (leaf-wrapped rice) for over 20 years. On an early dinner with her boyfriend, the writer ordered the snail and beef bulgogi set for two and added a single hanwoo (Korean beef) tteokgalbi (grilled short-rib patty). The meal came with snail ssamjang (dipping paste) in a clay pot, sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) and ssam greens from the self-serve bar. Back after several years, Neulbom tasted exactly as remembered, making it a solid pick for a proper meal on a Gyeongju trip.

Neulbom in Gyeongju's Bomun-danji, what kind of place is it
Neulbom is a snail ssambap (rice with lettuce wraps) hanjeongsik restaurant located at 681 Hadong, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, in Bomun-danji. It's open from 09:00 to 21:00, and there's a parking lot too.

On a trip to Gyeongju with my boyfriend, I wanted to introduce him to one of my favorite Gyeongju restaurants in Bomun-danji, so we headed to Neulbom.

This Gyeongju Bomun-danji restaurant has a really large parking lot so there's no worry about parking, which made it even easier to visit — and even though it had been a while, it still had a lot of customers, haha.
A genuinely great Gyeongju restaurant

Neulbom has over 20 years of history, and there's enough of a wait during peak hours that it really is a genuinely great restaurant — feels like a must-visit on a Gyeongju trip!
Inside Neulbom: floor seating and table seating
Neulbom has both table seating and floor seating, and operates up to the 2nd floor. There's an elevator too.

Even though we came for an early dinner, I was surprised how many people were already eating — since Neulbom has both table and floor seating, it's comfortable to visit even with young kids.

By the way, this Gyeongju Bomun-danji restaurant also has a second floor, and since there's an elevator, it's perfect for visiting with elderly family members too.
Menu & prices

To serve healthy, distinctive food to guests, Neulbom says they make their own meju (fermented soybean blocks) and jang (sauces) in-house. Since everything is cooked from scratch, this is a great spot for anyone wanting genuinely delicious Korean food.
Snail bulgogi for two + tteokgalbi side
For the main dish at Neulbom, you choose between bulgogi, tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), or jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork). We chose the bulgogi, and added an hanwoo tteokgalbi as a side.

The menu is simple — you just pick bulgogi, tteokgalbi, or jeyuk-bokkeum. We went with bulgogi, and it came with the bulgogi hot pot, stone-pot snail ssamjang, sundubu jjigae, and a variety of side dishes.

Every dish is so neatly presented — each side dish is clean and delicious, so this is a must-visit for Korean food lovers.

On top of that, there's a wide variety of ssam leaves, and you can take as much as you want from the self-serve bar, just so you know.
Snail ssamjang

First I tried the snail ssamjang, and it wasn't too salty while having an excellent savory flavor — they were generous with the chewy snails too, nailing both taste and texture! It's great wrapped in a ssam, but mixed straight into rice it's ridiculously good too.
Bulgogi

The bulgogi is really a crowd-pleaser with basically no one who'd dislike it — personally, it wasn't too sweet, so I could enjoy it happily from start to finish.

What I especially liked was how tender the meat was and how well the seasoning soaked in — mixing rice into the broth made it absolutely delicious.
Sundubu jjigae

Personally I was surprised by the sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) — the tofu's savory flavor was on par with a dedicated tofu restaurant! I'm not usually a big fan of tofu, but I genuinely enjoyed this.
Hanwoo tteokgalbi

Wanting to try the hanwoo tteokgalbi too, we added it as a side, and it really was a can't-fail choice — the meat was full of juices and moderately sweet, so I'd say it's definitely worth ordering, especially if you have kids.

It suits kids' palates but is a perfect match for adults too — by the way, the meat isn't fully minced so it kept a bit of texture, which I liked even more, and that gentle charcoal aroma was really the best.
Back at Neulbom after several years, exactly the taste I remembered

A proper Gyeongju Bomun-danji restaurant, found again. Honestly, since it had been several years since my last visit, I worried the taste might have changed — but they kept exactly the flavor I remembered, which made me even happier. If you want a truly proper meal on your Gyeongju trip, definitely give this a try.
