Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch is a pot-lid pork belly restaurant in Bupyeong, Incheon, a 3-minute walk from Bupyeong Station Exit 7, where a 600g platter (35,900 won) comes with crab doenjang stew and steamed egg. Over a Sunday lunch of a half pork belly, half pork neck platter with pork jowl and minari, plus extra pork belly and extra-large pork skin, the standouts were the chewy pork jowl, kimchi grilled in pork fat and pork skin dipped in chili sauce and soybean powder. For good-value pork belly near Bupyeong Station, Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch is a solid choice.

Gimpo shabu-shabu family revisit, suyuk over delivery bossam: Homilwon

Homilwon Shabu Kalguksu Gimpo Main Branch is a shabu kalguksu (shabu-shabu with knife-cut noodles) restaurant in Geolpo-dong, Gimpo, Gyeonggi. After a tasty visit a few months earlier, the writer returned with family and ordered the Hangsang Gadeuk Special Sanghwang Shabu Kalguksu (19,900 won per person). It came like a course: shabu-shabu, suyuk (boiled pork), stir-fried baby octopus, rye kalguksu and perilla oil fried rice. The suyuk, expected to be a side, beat a bossam specialist recently ordered by delivery. With one order filling the whole table and a large parking lot, Homilwon is a Gimpo family dinner spot worth returning to.

Duck lunch near Starfield Bucheon: chili soy sauce dip, Grill Duck

Grill Duck Hangari Barbecue is a duck and jar barbecue restaurant on Beoman-ro in Siheung, Gyeonggi, about a 3-minute drive from Starfield Bucheon. For a weekend family lunch, the writer ordered half-and-half duck (400g raw duck + 400g seasoned duck jumulleok, 54,000 won) and chive fried rice (3,000 won), then went straight to Starfield to shop; the cheongyang chili soy sauce paired with the raw duck stood out. Grill Duck is a duck restaurant worth revisiting for a family meal before or after shopping at Starfield Bucheon.

Seoul Korean BBQ at Balsan Station: white kimchi wraps, Ihwajeong

Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch is a pork galbi (marinated ribs) restaurant near Exit 4 of Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. The writer ordered 2 servings (300g) of marinated grilled pork at ₩23,000 per serving with doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and rice, then added bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles). Staff grilled the pork galbi from start to finish, and it came out tender with a marinade that wasn't overpowering. With wide table spacing, separate rooms and free pear sherbet, Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga is a solid pick for a group dinner near Balsan Station.

Budget Gimpo Korean restaurant: ₩13,000 octopus pot rice set, Osaejju

Osaejju (불쭈꾸미 오새쭈) is a baby octopus restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Samseong Plaza building in Pungmu-dong, Gimpo. On a weekend lunch, two jjusam pot rice sets (spicy baby octopus and pork belly stir-fry, 13,000 won per person) came with turmeric pot rice, steamed egg, chilled seaweed soup, cabbage salad and seasoned vegetables, and the heat was just a little stronger than Shin Ramyun. At 26,000 won for two, including a namul bibimbap and scorched-rice tea to finish, Osaejju is a filling, great-value meal.

Geomdan gyukatsu date: butter brazier and spicy ramen set, HOKATSU

HOKATSU is a Japanese tonkatsu and gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) restaurant on the ground floor of the Megabox Geomdan building on Seogot-ro, Geomdan-gu, Incheon. On a weekday-evening date, two people shared the Double Hogyu Katsu + Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen set (41,000 won), melting butter on a mini brazier to grill the beef katsu a piece or two at a time, alongside a tonkotsu ramen broth about as spicy as Shin Ramyun. The HOKATSU hogyu katsu and ramen set is generous enough for two and well worth recommending.
