Dal-dong, Ulsan bakery café: choc financiers, sourdough, Emily Bakery

In short

Emily Bakery is a bakery café on the second floor of 144 Wangsaeng-ro in Nam-gu, Ulsan, selling baguettes and baked sweets made fresh every morning. The writer visited early in the morning, ate white and chocolate financiers at Emily Bakery, and took home a chocolate baguette and a sourdough loaf. Emily Bakery is worth a stop for financiers that are crisp outside and moist inside and for a chewy baguette.

Heading up to the 2nd-floor café at Emily Bakery

Head up to the 2nd floor and you'll find a warm, cozy café space. I went early in the morning, and the smell of freshly baked bread filled the shop. Instant bread therapy the moment I walked in.

Even though it's a café in central Ulsan, the view from the 2nd-floor window is quiet and peaceful, so even a short stay felt healing.

First, the mouthwatering lineup of baked sweets caught my eye! From baguettes to all kinds of desserts, everything looked so good that I couldn't decide what to pick!

Canelés and financiers on display at Emily Bakery

The canelés and financiers (small French almond butter cakes) look sooo good! As a chocolate addict, I picked the white and chocolate financiers. Crisp outside, moist inside, and sooo delicious. I should have bought more..

How does Emily Bakery package baguettes for takeout?

I also took home bread for the next day from Emily Bakery. The takeout bag is see-through so you can see what's inside, which made it easy to grab from.

They sliced the bread right after I ordered. It goes round and round and round and I got totally hypnotized...

As it was sliced, the crumb structure showed and it looked so soft and fluffy that I wanted to grab a piece right away! The fermentation is done properly!!

Chocolate baguette with raspberry jam

The chocolate baguette at Emily Bakery came with raspberry jam! The sweetness of the generous chocolate spreads right through the baguette's plain, nutty flavor!

It's sweet on its own, but with a little raspberry jam on top, the fresh tartness makes it so, so much better. Sweet chocolate and tangy raspberry is a great combo!! The baguette's chewy texture is already great, so I bet the plain baguette is really, truly delicious too! With coffee, it's a perfect match.

Sourdough baked with their own levain

Sourdough isn't fermented with yeast like regular bread. It's made by fermenting slowly over time with levain, a natural starter. That gives it a subtle tang, deep flavor, and a crisp-outside, chewy-inside texture. Emily Bakery says its sourdough is baked with a levain they raise themselves, and when I tried it, it tasted more nutty and plain than sour!

At home I topped it with avocado and chopped onion, and this combo is seriously good, haha! The soft avocado and crunchy onion on chewy sourdough is just so tasty!
