In short

On a trip built around taking market food back to the lodging for dinner, the writer took out one serving of Hwanggeum Mulhoe for 20,000 won, poured in the separately packed slushy broth just before eating and added buckwheat noodles. Where to get mulhoe to go at Sokcho Jungang Market: Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip
Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip (속초황금물회횟집) is a mulhoe favorite right at the entrance of Sokcho Jungang Market. On this Sokcho trip I picked up all kinds of food at the market and ate dinner back at the lodging. I really wanted proper raw fish, so I got mulhoe to go from Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip, famous as a mulhoe spot in the market.

It was really easy to find. It sits right in front of the market entrance, so there's no way to get lost.
It turns out it has the same owner as Ttokine Twigim (똑이네 튀김), the place whose crispy squid sundae (stuffed squid sausage) I raved about last time. If you spend over a certain amount at Ttokine Twigim, you get a discount coupon for Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip.

What are the fish tanks and menu like at Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip?
There's a huge tank near the entrance, and you can watch the fresh live fish swimming around.

Next to the fish tank there's a separate tank for snow crab. Both the fish and the crabs were big and lively, really fresh seafood.

The menu is really varied! From the basic Hwanggeum Mulhoe I ordered to sashimi and snow crab sets, there's plenty.

The inside is also much bigger and tidier than I expected! Most of the customers were people waiting for sashimi takeout.

How long is the wait for mulhoe takeout?
I think it took barely 5 minutes to get my takeout mulhoe. I still had to buy lots of snacks at the market, so the short wait was really nice. They packed it in a yellow cooler bag, so it stayed fresh while I wandered the market.
Hwanggeum Mulhoe for one to go: how I ate it at the lodging
Here's the takeout serving of Hwanggeum Mulhoe from Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip.

Back at the lodging, I put the mulhoe in the fridge and took it out when it was time for dinner. They pack the broth separately, so you can pour it on right before eating, which I loved. That kept the fish fresh and the vegetables crunchy 👍

When I opened the lid, the look of it was overwhelming! It was packed with fresh raw fish, and lettuce and other vegetables were piled in generously too.
Then I poured in the whole bottle of icy mulhoe broth. I'd kept the broth in the freezer and took it out about 5 minutes before eating?

The tangy-sweet mulhoe smell wafted right up and I couldn't wait to dig in.

As soon as the broth went in, the fresh fish and vegetables started mingling with the seasoning. Doesn't the color of the plump, chewy fish and the yellow sea squirt look delicious?

Is the ₩20,000 Hwanggeum Mulhoe generous and tasty?
For a solo mulhoe at a good-value ₩20,000, there was really a lot of fish in it!

I grabbed a big scoop and tried it. The thinly sliced fish had a springy texture, fresh and chewy.

Picking up lettuce, cucumber and sea squirt with the fish in one bite with chopsticks made it even cooler and fresher. I especially love sea squirt, and the sea-scented sea squirt went really well with the spicy-tangy mulhoe.

Buckwheat noodles over somyeon (thin wheat noodles) for mulhoe
About halfway through the Hwanggeum Mulhoe, I dropped in extra buckwheat noodles! Mulhoe usually comes with somyeon (thin wheat noodles), but personally I think buckwheat noodles go better with it.

Is Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip worth going back to for mulhoe takeout?
If you're looking for a good mulhoe takeout spot on a Sokcho trip, I strongly recommend Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip! The portion was generous and fresh, and I was really satisfied. I'll definitely stop by again next time I'm in Sokcho 😊
