Hwagok-dong snack bar with a solo jjolmyeon set: Uwol Gimbap

In short

Uwol Gimbap is a bunsik (Korean snack food) and rice-meal restaurant in Hwagok-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, in the back alley behind Exit 3 of Ujangsan Station. After a walk around Songhwa Mural Market, the writer stopped in alone for aged kimchi tuna gimbap and the jjolmyeon set — chewy jjolmyeon noodles with gimbap and donkatsu — and filled out the table from a self-serve bar of seasoned bean sprouts, stir-fried fish cakes and garlic scapes. Uwol Gimbap felt relaxed enough to eat alone without a second thought, making it a solid solo-dining pick in Gangseo.

Uwol Gimbap: a Hwagok-dong snack bar for solo dining behind Ujangsan Station Exit 3

On a day when I wanted a meal that felt filling but not heavy, I went looking for a good place to eat in Hwagok-dong and ended up at Uwol Gimbap. It's in the back alley near Exit 3 of Ujangsan Station, an easy walk from the station, and a convenient stop after visiting Songhwa Mural Market. When I'm looking for a good spot near Ujangsan, what matters most to me is whether I can comfortably eat alone — and Uwol Gimbap's clean, cozy interior made solo dining feel completely natural.

The tidy, well-kept interior of Uwol Gimbap

Walking into this spot near Ujangsan Station, my first impression was how tidy and well-kept everything was. The tables were spaced generously, so it looked comfortable not just for solo diners but for groups too.

The staff were friendly too, which made the first impression even more welcoming. The calm atmosphere throughout the meal made it a great place for eating alone in Gangseo — I got a quick meal in, but it still felt like a proper, satisfying sit-down.

What's on the Uwol Gimbap menu, from gimbap to rice bowls and stews

One of the best things about this Gangseo-gu restaurant is that, despite being a bunsik (Korean snack food) spot, it's not just gimbap (seaweed rice roll) and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) — the menu covers full meals too. Just the gimbap options alone were extensive: vegetable gimbap, crab-stick tempura gimbap, anchovy gimbap, spicy anchovy gimbap, tuna gimbap, wasabi tuna gimbap, aged kimchi tuna gimbap, beef gimbap, double cheese gimbap, donkatsu gimbap, and keto gimbap.

Beyond gimbap, there were filling rice bowl dishes like omurice, kimchi fried rice, chicken mayo rice bowl, spicy pork rice bowl, and bulgogi rice bowl, along with bunsik staples like tteokbokki, ramen, udon, jjolmyeon (chewy spicy cold noodles), naengmyeon (cold noodles), and cold soba. On top of that, they also had kimchi jjigae and budae jjigae, so you could get anything from a light snack to a proper sit-down meal in one place.

What especially stood out was how substantial the set meals were. The ramen set comes with ramen, gimbap, and donkatsu, and there are similar sets built around udon, jjolmyeon, naengmyeon, and memil. If you can't decide on just one dish, these let you try several at once — great for anyone looking for good value.

Aged kimchi tuna gimbap: the combination that cuts the richness

I ordered the aged kimchi tuna gimbap and the jjolmyeon set. The aged kimchi tuna gimbap combined the mild, savory softness of tuna with aged kimchi, which kept the whole bite feeling clean. Tuna-only gimbap can sometimes feel a bit heavy, but the tangy, refreshing flavor of the aged kimchi cut right through that richness.

Each bite had just the right amount of stickiness and nuttiness from the rice, and the fillings balanced well with it. The aged kimchi wasn't overly sour or sharp — it added a subtle savoriness that worked well with the tuna. With the nutty aroma of the seaweed on top, it was the kind of roll that kept pulling my hand back for more. The individual ingredients came through clearly while still working together well, so if you like gimbap that feels wholesome, this one would likely hit the spot.

For solo dining in Gangseo, this was a dish near Ujangsan Station that worked well whether eaten as a single roll on its own or paired with other bunsik dishes.

Inside the jjolmyeon set: jjolmyeon, gimbap and donkatsu in one order

The jjolmyeon set at this Gangseo-gu restaurant came with jjolmyeon, gimbap, and donkatsu together, making it a pretty substantial single meal.

The jjolmyeon noodles had a great chewy bite that made them fun to eat, and the tangy-sweet, spicy sauce definitely woke up the appetite. The sauce wasn't overly sweet — the tanginess was well balanced, which made it pair nicely with both the gimbap and the donkatsu.

At this restaurant near Ujangsan Station, taking a bite of gimbap right after the jjolmyeon let the sharp sauce flavor melt smoothly into the plain, nutty taste of the gimbap.

Going the other way — gimbap first, then jjolmyeon — the tangy-spicy sauce refreshed the palate again, so I kept going back and forth between the two. With donkatsu on the table as well, the whole set felt really substantial.

The donkatsu, with its crispy coating and tender meat, paired especially well with the spicy-tangy jjolmyeon. Behind the crunch was a nice savory flavor, and eating it alongside the jjolmyeon felt like the two dishes filled in each other's gaps. It was noticeably more filling than the noodles alone, and with the gimbap on top, the meal felt truly complete.

The self-serve bar: seasoned bean sprouts, fish cakes and garlic scapes

Another thing I liked about this Gangseo-gu restaurant was the self-serve bar. Besides kimchi and pickled radish, there were seasoned bean sprouts, stir-fried fish cakes, and garlic scapes — great for snacking on between bites. Broth and water were also self-serve, so I could help myself to as much as I wanted.

Having side dishes like seasoned bean sprouts and garlic scapes made the meal feel less like a quick bunsik stop and more like a proper home-style spread. The ingredients were fresh and the side dishes were neatly prepared, which showed in the overall care put into the food. Portions were generous too, so the value for the price felt solid.
