Taking a walk through the Yeonnam-dong alleys after a while, a pretty building — a renovated house — caught my eye from far away.

The place I visited this time is Butter & Shelter Yeonnam, a cozy, comfortable space full of European vibes in Yeonnam-dong.

Tucked inside the alley, the moment you step in you feel that warm, snug atmosphere — it'd make a great spot for a Hongdae date or a Yeonnam-dong date.

Visiting Butter & Shelter Yeonnam: waiting, dogs, and parking

Butter & Shelter Yeonnam runs a waiting system for indoor seating. There was a neat sign near the entrance explaining the store's usage rules — being such a popular Yeonnam-dong dessert spot, it seems there's a wait on weekends or during peak hours.

The moment I stepped inside, what struck me was the European-style interior right from the entrance, along with the wonderfully cool, well-managed air inside. The weather outside felt a bit stuffy, so the cool air the moment I walked in instantly lifted my mood — it felt healing.

They also noted that outdoor seats are hard to use during rain, heat waves, or other special conditions, and that dogs are only allowed at the outdoor terrace seats — good to know in advance if you're visiting with a pet. Also, there's no dedicated parking lot, so if you're driving, I'd recommend parking at a nearby public parking lot.

What's in the dessert display case

Heading further inside to check out the display case, I found a range of desserts neatly lined up under warm, cozy lighting — the kind of visual you eat with your eyes first. Besides butter sand, there were surprisingly many kinds of desserts, from colorful, delicious-looking cakes to golden-baked cookies.

Everything looked delicious so I stood there debating for a while, but decided the butter sand had to be the main event here, so I took a closer look at the sand varieties. According to the staff, the butter sand is the signature item unique to this Mapo café, made with handmade caramel and a generous sandwiching of homemade butter cream using gourmet butter.

I'd heard it's so popular that items often sell out early, but luckily on my visit there was still stock left in every flavor, which made my heart flutter a little. After some thought, I decided it'd make a great gift too, so I went ahead with a full takeout order.

The gift box packaging was so clean and pretty that it'd earn compliments if you brought it as a gift to someone special. I chose the creme brulee butter sand, chocolate butter sand, glacage butter sand, and raspberry cream cheese butter sand, and had them all packed up.

While browsing the counter, the butter cookies on display caught my eye and looked so good that I ended up packing those too.

Once the order was done, they handed it over beautifully wrapped in a clean, sturdy paper bag with handles. As the staff member gave it to me, she kindly explained that if you're not eating the butter sand right away, freezing it and then thawing it slightly lets you enjoy it just like the first bite — a great tip.

Butter sand taste test: creme brulee, chocolate, and raspberry

As soon as I got home, I opened up the bag I'd carefully carried and got ready for dessert time. The moment I opened the box, a rich, nutty butter aroma rushed up to greet me — properly mouth-watering.

The first one I pulled out, the creme brulee butter sand, had a beautifully caramelized top that captured my eyes completely. Taking a big bite, a luxurious vanilla aroma filled my mouth — it was truly excellent. Inside was a generous, rich layer of sweet, soft custard butter cream, giving it a deep, refined flavor. The combination of the moist, crumbly cookie texture and the sweet custard cream was pure bliss.

Next was the chocolate butter sand — the cookie exterior was evenly coated in rich, slightly bitter dark chocolate, and the look alone screamed luxury. The cream inside was a soft chocolate cream made with fine Valrhona powder and chunky chocolate pieces you could actually bite into, so a deep chocolate flavor spread through my mouth. It wasn't overly sweet — the deep bitterness and smoothness of the dark chocolate balanced it out, and I kept making little 'wow' sounds the whole time I was eating.

When I needed a tangy pick-me-up, I reached for the raspberry cream cheese butter sand, and that was also amazing.

My husband took one to eat as a dessert at work, and said it went perfectly with coffee haha. It's packed generously with rich, thick cream cheese and tangy raspberry sauce, so it was sweet, sour, and genuinely delightful. The nutty richness of the butter and the tartness of the raspberry balanced each other perfectly, so it never felt heavy and kept pulling me back for another bite.

The butter cookies, and what to order next visit

The butter cookies I'd brought along also melted in my mouth from the first bite, moist with a deep gourmet butter flavor — very satisfying. Both the butter sand and the cookies were consistently moist and delicious, making for a happy, enjoyable dessert time from start to finish.

If you love that nutty, deep flavor unique to butter, I'd say you must visit when you're in Yeonnam-dong. Once you experience the luxurious butter aroma filling your mouth alongside the sweet harmony of the choux cream, you'll become a regular in no time.

This time I only got takeout, so I was left with a bit of longing — apparently the signature cream choux and coffee sold in-store are also really delicious. Next time I'll try to visit earlier and more diligently, wait it out if needed, and enjoy the coffee and desserts leisurely inside the cozy store.
