Dunsan-dong Korean restaurant, galbitang before night market: Hanppong
In short
Hanppong is a galbitang (beef short rib soup) and gukbap (rice soup) restaurant in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Before a weekend trip to the Daejeon night market, the writer and her boyfriend arrived at Hanppong just after the 11:00 opening and ordered the 12,000-won galbitang and the doganitang (beef knee soup). Both came in big earthenware bowls packed with meat, and the silbi kimchi was very spicy. Hanppong is worth considering for a filling, good-value lunch in Dunsan-dong.

Weekend lunch at Hanppong in Dunsan-dong before the Daejeon night market
On a weekend my boyfriend and I stopped at Hanppong (한뽕) in Dunsan-dong for lunch on our way to the Daejeon night market :) I didn't pick it for the distance to the market, I just wanted a lunch that would really fill us up, and this is the Daejeon restaurant I found. In these high-price times, a bowl of galbitang (short rib soup) here is seriously good value?! My boyfriend is basically a galbitang addict, so off we went. Let's take a look!

Where do you park at Hanppong in Dunsan-dong?
There are about 2 parking spaces in front of Hanppong, and you can also park flexibly in the alley behind. Both the front and the back of the restaurant are alleys, and the navigation sends you to the front. One side of the street had a white line, so we parked there and walked in right after the 11:00 opening.

Hanppong's atmosphere and self-serve bar
Hanppong has long wooden tables, and some tables on one side were set aside as reserved seats. Lunchtime was close, so I guess some people had booked ahead! The kitchen is open and was kept neat, and the self-serve bar has kimchi and kkakdugi, so if the side dishes you receive aren't enough, you can grab more there.

How much is galbitang at Hanppong?
Galbitang at Hanppong is ₩12,000. Still a great-value gukbap price, even looking at it again! Hardly anywhere sells galbitang for ₩12,000, right? I thought it usually costs close to ₩20,000, so I was surprised at how cheap it is. Besides galbitang there was a menu item called "Hanppong Bak Kut Teh", but from the reviews I found it seems it hasn't launched yet, so I didn't ask about it. We ordered one galbitang and one doganitang.

Beyond the gukbap there are also whole-cow suyuk (boiled beef slices), pork bone gamjatang (pork bone stew) and aged-kimchi gamjatang, so it's fine for eating solo, but a group could also come and enjoy one main dish together! Hanppong was also running a ✅ review event: for a photo review, it looked like they give you the meal kit? next to it. It's a chance to have a meal at home too, so everyone should join in.

Whole-radish kkakdugi and very spicy silbi kimchi
The basic side dishes at Hanppong are silbi kimchi (kimchi made with thin shredded cabbage strands) and kkakdugi! A gukbap place serving kkakdugi with the radish still whole, hahaha. Hanppong is a curious place. The silbi kimchi is something different too!

Actually, this was my first time ever trying silbi kimchi at Hanppong? I hear people even put the spicy silbi kimchi into their gukbap, and when I tried a little, it was really, really spicy. If you like silbi kimchi, try it at Hanppong. The heat sinks right in, so people who love spicy food will probably like it.

How was the portion of Hanppong's galbitang and doganitang?
My boyfriend's pick, the galbitang, and my choice, the doganitang, both came in big earthenware bowls really heaped with ingredients. The galbitang broth had a slightly brownish tint, and the doganitang was the color of sagol (beef bone) broth. Both came topped with lots of green onion, and the bowls were quite large, yet what was inside was so generous that I was surprised. I just wonder how they can offer this kind of value!

Galbitang with plenty of ribs and broth
Hanppong's galbitang has more ribs than I expected, and quite a lot of meat clings to the bones, so it's the fun kind of galbitang where you pick the meat off. If you cut the middle with scissors, the meat slips right off. My boyfriend says that when there's a lot of galbitang broth you can put the rice straight in, which is nice, and luckily Hanppong's galbitang has lots of broth, so it's good for scooping in big spoonfuls from the start. Just careful, it's hot!

Doganitang with plenty of cartilage and glass noodles
Hanppong's doganitang has a solid amount of dogani (beef knee cartilage) and also dangmyeon (glass noodles), and I felt I'd made the right choice for a hearty meal at Hanppong.

Hanppong's kkakdugi tastes mildly sweet and still has some crunch, so topping a spoonful of rice with dogani and kkakdugi together is a great three-way combo. After finishing the meal, I wrapped up with coffee~~~ If you're looking for a lunch place in Dunsan-dong, give Hanppong a look!
