Sokcho market seafood shop, last snow crab lunchbox to go: Yes Susan

In short

Yes Susan (예스수산) is a seafood shop on the first floor of Sokcho Jungang Market (Tourist & Fishery Market) in Sokcho, Gangwon, selling snow crab and red snow crab lunchboxes to go. On the last day of a Sokcho trip, the writer took home the very last snow crab lunchbox left on a weekend afternoon, plus fried rice, and shared both with her boyfriend over soju. Every leg was packed with meat, the innards were plentiful, and the shell came wrapped in an extra layer of cling film. Even someone who only trusted freshly steamed crab at a restaurant found that the Yes Susan snow crab lunchbox delivers both flavor and value.

Why I packed a snow crab lunchbox from Yes Susan on my last day in Sokcho

I took a snow crab lunchbox to go from Yes Susan (예스수산) at Sokcho Jungang Market :) Sokcho means snow crab, right?! My boyfriend and I had already eaten crab the evening before, but on the day we headed home I couldn't forget the taste and started looking into crab takeout. Then I found a place in Sokcho Jungang Market selling snow crab lunchboxes, stopped by, and what do you know, the price was crazy good AND the taste was amazing?! The sweet, springy crab texture was incredible. Let's take a look!

Where is Yes Susan in Sokcho Jungang Market?

Yes Susan is inside Sokcho Jungang Market, and you see it right after the dried seafood alley, so it wasn't hard to find. Most of the red snow crab and snow crab takeout in Sokcho seemed to come from Yes Susan, and when I visited, the tanks full of moving fresh crabs stood out. The tanks are well kept, and they even get delivery orders!

Will snow crab lunchboxes still be left on a weekend afternoon?

When I went to Yes Susan on a weekend afternoon, there were plenty of red snow crab lunchboxes, but only one snow crab lunchbox left. Lucky me, I got it right away! I'd never thought of getting snow crab as takeout, but the prices of the snow crab and red snow crab lunchboxes were so reasonable that this was a place I had to visit. The red snow crab lunchbox had about 2–3 crabs in it.

Should you add fried rice to the snow crab lunchbox?

Yes Susan's fried rice comes with stir-fried kimchi and salted seafood (jeotgal), and the portion is generous, so it was perfect to eat with the crab lunchbox as drinking food. Their slogan is "Cheap, tasty, honest!", and I packed fried rice to go with the crab. It's not optional, it's a must.

How is the meat yield and packaging of Yes Susan's snow crab lunchbox?

The lid on Yes Susan's snow crab lunchbox is clear, so you can check the meat yield in the shop before choosing. Here's the lunchbox I brought home! Looking again, every leg was packed with meat and the innards were overflowing, so of course it's delicious, a Sokcho Jungang Market eat through and through. They also give you chopsticks, spoons and hygiene gloves, so I thought it would be great to enjoy by the Sokcho sea too.

Seriously crazy,, and I only found this out after opening it: the crab shell is wrapped once in cling film so the innards don't leak, an extra layer of packaging. Great thinking, boss 👍 Thanks to that, I happily scooped up my beloved innards by the spoonful.

Is takeout crab as good as crab steamed at a restaurant?

Yes Susan's snow crab lunchbox tasted fresh, the meat yield was amazing, so even as takeout the flavor is guaranteed and the value is great too. One shot of soju, one leg: look at this sight! I have no idea how anyone holds back. I prepped one claw right away and wow,, the sweetness was insane. I always thought crab had to come out freshly steamed to be good, so I only ever ate it at restaurants, but the lunchbox totally satisfied me.

The soju just slid down. The crab meat was sweet with no fishy taste at all, so good. Why did I only find out about Yes Susan's snow crab lunchbox now? I glanced at the red snow crab lunchboxes too and every one was packed with meat, so next time I'll bring home a red snow crab + snow crab combo for an even bigger feast.

How I ate the crab innards

The innards are rich and nutty, so they're great with a bite of fried rice, and also perfect as a dipping sauce for the crab meat. My boyfriend diligently picked the leg meat for me, and it was the real deal, I'm losing it~~! It was such a happy time in every way.

How does Yes Susan's fried rice taste, and is it enough for two?

The fried rice I ordered separately from Yes Susan keeps the nutty richness of the innards, and eaten with the stir-fried kimchi the seasoning is just right. The portion is also just right for two, so for anyone heading to Sokcho, Yes Susan is a must-stop for red snow crab and snow crab takeout!
