Sejong Japanese pub for soy sauce motsunabe: Motsumo
In short
Motsumo Sejong Dodam Branch is a Japanese-style pub in Sejong’s Dodam-dong dining alley specializing in beef offal hot pot. We shared a special soy sauce motsunabe with extra noodles and cheese okonomiyaki; the hot pot was less rich than I expected, generous, and especially interesting as the broth changed while it cooked.

I visited Motsumo Sejong Dodam Branch (모츠모 세종도담점) for my first motsunabe (Japanese beef offal hot pot). I was a little concerned it might be very rich, but the soy sauce version was easy to eat.

How do you get there and make a reservation in Dodam-dong?
The restaurant is in Dodam-dong’s dining alley, so it was easy to find. It is about a five-minute walk from the BRT, making it convenient to reach by public transit. The address is 114, 8-12 Bodeum 3-ro, Sejong-si, South Korea.
When I visited, its hours were 5 PM to 1 AM, and reservations were available through Naver Place. I thought making a reservation could be useful if you plan to go straight after work.
What are the interior and group seating like?
The interior was on the compact side. Wall posters and warm lighting stood out, and there were long tables that looked suitable for company dinners.

Because you cook the hot pot as you eat, it felt like a good setting to sit for a while and enjoy drinks with a meal.

What did we order for two?
The two of us ordered the special soy sauce motsunabe with extra noodles, along with cheese okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancake). Motsunabe came in regular and special sizes, with three flavor options. Since it was my first time trying it, I chose soy sauce.

Pollock roe mayonnaise, kimchi, and a side dish whose name I was not certain of came with the meal. The sides were mild, so they went well with the motsunabe. At first I hesitated over how to eat the pollock roe mayonnaise, but it worked well with everything we ordered.

We ordered through the table kiosk. Beyond motsunabe, the menu included gobdoritang (spicy chicken and beef offal stew), nakgopsae (octopus, beef offal, and shrimp stew), nakusa e (octopus and beef stew), and suyuk jeongol (boiled pork hot pot), as well as yakigyoza dumplings, grilled shrimp, grilled shishamo, and grilled mero.

Was the first soy sauce motsunabe too rich?
The special motsunabe was generous in portion, with a mound of garlic chives on top. The owner kindly explained that it had already been partly cooked and only needed a little more time on the heat.

We cooked it a little longer on the gas burner at the table before eating. I liked how the broth changed slightly in flavor between the first taste and as it continued cooking.

Before eating, I worried that a beef offal hot pot would be very rich. In the end, it was not as rich as I had feared, and the seasoning suited my taste. It felt like a dish that worked well somewhere between a drinking snack and a full meal.

There was guidance to add the extra noodles later, but we added them midway through the meal. The soy sauce version I had went well with beer.
How much cheese okonomiyaki is there to share?

The cheese okonomiyaki had plenty of cheese on top. To me, it was large enough that even four people could share it.

It was also filling, with plenty of cabbage, meat, and seafood inside. I visited in summer, but because you cook and eat a warm hot pot, I thought it would be nice to return in cool fall or winter weather.
